mrrjm
I'm using popcorn 1. When extracting or compressing video it only uses (1) processor. Does Popcorn 2 take advantage of more then one processor? My machine is a PowerMac G5 Quad processor. mrrjm
macmidiguy
I'm using Popcorn 2 on a Mac Pro 2.66 ... looks like roughly 220% usage. Currently, I'm taking a Video_TS folder to a MP4. Is that good that P2 is hogging 220% ?

But contrary to you I have Popcorn 2.01 and it doesn't use the second processor. Why is that - can I enable it? Is it that hard to write or is Roxio just planing to have it as a new feature in Popcorn 3...? All new macs on the market use at least two processors... macmidiguy
... My machine is a PowerMac G5 Quad processor.mrrjm That's interesting to me because I am in the market for the G5 quad. I thought I read somewhere that there is some setting in system preferences but which control panel I can't recall.
freshburn
It uses all the processors and altivec engine, it just depends on what you are doing. Export to iPod for example will use much more than re-compression.

How can itest that the daul processors are actually working: for example when I am printing and at the same time running a simple application such as text edit ( with no other application on in the background ) there is a definate slow down during my typing. So I have always scoffed at this claim of dual processing. Incidently the G4 is maximized for RAM so I can't improve that area.

I'm not an expert on this but I think you can monitor the processor usage using the Console application in the Utilities folder. You might find more info at discussions.apple.com for your model of Mac. Edit: Oops, I was wrong. It is the Activity Monitor as described in the following post. mrrjm
Since I started this post I have to respond. My machine is a G5 quad with 8gb of EEC ram running the latest version of OSX. Popcorn 1 only uses the processing speed of one processor. I know this because I open up the activity monitor and watch the CPU useage. If all 4 processors where being used then the %of CPU for Popcorn would be 400%. 400% is all 4 processors at 100%. Programs like iPhoto, iMovie, etc. will use 200% or the processing power of 2 processors. Final Cut Pro and Aperture will peak out at almost 400%. They are written to take advantage of all 4 processors. So going back to my original question...Does Popcorn 2 support multiple processors? If someone has Popcorn 2 please open the activity monitor when video is being compressed and see what the CPU% is. Is it at or around 100% or is it closer to 200%? You will need to have a Dual or Quad processor machine for obvious reasons. Ray
John at Roxio
If you are running other apps it will start using less, so its actually not a bad thing unless you are tring to do something else processor intensive.
