Estimates that must-see shows like Lost, Desperate Housewives and 24 are getting over a million illegal downloads per episode - up from around 150,000 a few years ago.

At the time of writing, the latest episode of CSI New York has more than 1,000 people exchanging the programme from just one source and less than 24 hours after broadcast in the US.

OK, I confess that I love Spooks (Britain) and download it's 10 shows each season but it doesn't even play in the US on A&E until 2 years later and then, they take a 58 minute show and cut out 14 minutes and then you have nothing you can understand.

Here's a 'you can't answer' questions: Is it stealing if it's not offered here? I mean I don't even have a chance to pay for it. I could wait 2 years and get it free on A&E then tape it myself. Really, what's the difference? I don't advocate stealing but say I had a friend in London and each week, he mailed me a copy (for free) of a tape he made of the show....then what?

Well, since Sci-Fi hasn't resumed showing Stargate Atlantis and the Canadians have, are you going to forbid Americans from downloading it to watch? (Especially since Gen.O'Neill was left in a very sticky position when the holiday recess came).

Vanished was taken off air because of slightly falling ratings, but the final episodes can be watched on-line from an authorised site - what's the difference.

If a tv series is free-to-air, how can watching it later be stealing?

The people with the power would be better employed stopping the great floods of spam and viruses which nearly cripple the Internet, than chasing viewers who don't like advertisements or aren't free to watch programs at the original time they're aired.

I haven't seen Stargate in 2 years. It was one of my favorite shows, but it was Stargate SG-1, I think, when I was watching it.

It came on right after Andromeda, late Saturday nights, here.

I have to admit first of all that I do it myself - when the BBC screened 'Rome' they actually ran episodes 1 - 3 together in two episodes, so I grabbed a copy of the HBO version.

However, I was working on TV repair when VCRs started to become commonplace (anybody else recall the old JVC 'piano-key' jobs? ) and there was some discussion on off-air taping

Apparently the legal (or copyright) definition was that you could record off-air programmes for your own use and you could keep that recording for 3 months and then you were supposed to wipe it. An exception was made for 'educational' programmes - those could be kept for a year.

As no guys in funny suits ever came kinocking at anyone's door demanding to see what was on video-tape, that particular rule sort of got totally ignored but it may still be the legal situation

We're not going to force any changes here but I think it's safe to say, good, honest people (not necessarily talking about myself) do things that some think are wrong and others don't. The law is the law but it can be changed and I am sure it will. It's very tacky to say it but in many cases I believe in Power to the People!

You don't need pirate TV to watch full length episodes of prime time shows like Desperate Housewives.

The networks are now advertising that you can go to their websites and watch the shows for free.

You can find Desperate Housewives and more here: ABC shows

ABC, CBS and soon, NBC will allow you watch the show for a short time shortly after it's shown live but not all the shows are available all the time. You also have to watch in chunks with ads in between. You can't fast forward thru the commercials either. And, I wouldn't mind paying $.99 to download it but I'm not doing so to download something that can only be watched on a 3" or 4" screen. If I download it, it must be viewable on a full screen size tv in at least, tv quality.

They're at least starting to see the best thing is to make us an offer.

FOX airs both Stargate Atlantis and Stargate SG1 here on the weekends at various times. However, they are the last year's episodes not the current season. Unfortunately, IMO they just aren't as good as they used to be with O'Neil out of it and all.

Atlantis is getting better reviews than SG1 and is being renewed next year while SG1 may not even finish the year :)

It's rare for a scifi show to make it 10 years. Heck, even non scifi shows are almost dead after 10 years!

The last time I watched, O'Neil was still there. If O'Neil is gone, how can they have the show? lol

All I want to know, what happened to Benny Hill and Howard Stern

on regular TV?

Then explain how any of those Housewives in that show are Desperate!

Well, Benny Hill died a ton of years ago, and Howard Stern is Howard Stern.

I have never seen Desperate Housewives.

Well, he's not gone gone, just didn't see him. Since he was "promoted" to be in charge of Homeworld Security, he wasn't around the SGC anymore. That's changed a bit now in Season 10, where he's showed back up again, and as someone mentioned, he was involved in a "cliffhanger" at the end of the 10th episode. Even if they don;t renew it for an 11th season, I hope they at least put a good finish to the show for the end of the 10th season.

Well that never stopped Gillian's Island!

I still miss the spokesmodel on Howard's TV show.

I have never seen Desperate Housewives either. Just the advertisements, they don't look Desperate to me.

Since most of you are into the Sci-Fi show. Is it half as good as the original Star Trek?

Suicide is painless . . . .

There is the rare exception of course, as you noted.

I think that's comparing apples to oranges in a way, but I find it to be just as good as the original Trek.

Believe it or not there are also weekly reruns of the original Star Trek airing locally. The sets look dated and a bit cheesy but the concept still holds up . . . tribbles are still hilarious! Some of the SG1 episodes were really good but it has lost its edge. Atlantis is kinda hohum. I'm getting bored with the bad alien of the week formula.

Ever see the DS9 episode 'Trials and Tribble-ations' where Sisko, Worf, Bashir and co go back in time to meet Kirk? (Worf's 'explanation' for the different appearance of the Klingons is a classic moment as is Bashir trying to chat up his great-great-grandma)

I probably did but it's lost in memory. SG1 and Atlantis episodes also quickly fade into oblivion but I still remember every one of the original Star Trek!

I remember when Star Trek Deep Space Nine was graded A for characterization. That didn't keep it on the air too long. Then Voyager, which I think lasted 6 or so years then Enterprise which made it 3???? There's not a big desire for 'space' shows that just show techy things. People want confrontation which is why reality shows are so popular......boy, can't wait till that phase is over.
