audio capture

lloydb39

Question

The program says it can capture by the Internet. When I try I get large files, but nothing is in them. I've tried on both line in and microphone settings, the only two there are.

I've been able to capture with other programs, but not Roxio. Anybody know what's up? The Help and Tutorials are No Help, and the online tech support is worthless, at least in this case.

Not sure but posting your computer specs is a good first start for us to try and help you. Maybe the other capture programs are causing the problem.

Posting the steps you take would help as well.

Oops, sorry. It is a Dell Pentium 4 with XP and a Sound Blaster Audigy sound card. The other caputure software is on my other desktop. Roxio is the only one on this machine. I started the capture function, then hit record, then started the music on the internet in Internet Explorer. It gave no indication it was recording, other than a timer running. After I shut it off I went to the folder and there were files there the three times I tried. All were about 15 megs, but when i put them into Musicmatch, there was no sound and when I opened them with the Roxio sound editor, it had no sound or any wave pattern.

What may be a clue is that the source for the sound in the capture software is given as Sigma Tel Audio, rather than Sound Blaster. Don't know what that is but the only other option for a source is "modem #O line record"

Sounds very similar to my system. Are you using the Easy Audio Capture function under the programs menu? Open it up and under input, look for 'What U Hear' as a choice and see if that works. This is not available on most onboard audio cards but my SB Audigy is a dedicated card and supports this function.

Sounds like the onboard audio chip is selected rather than the Audigy card. Did you disable the on board chip? Sometimes they are automatically disabled but in your case, maybe not. The Sigma Tel doesn't seem to work for this type of capture. When you are set up to capture, do you get a choice?

You may be on to something Steve. As I said, it's a system that seems similar to mine and I didn't even know I had onboard audio until I reformated and reinstalled XP. Next thing I knew, the onboard was changed in my BIOS to on. I didn't even go into the BIOS after the reinstall but I have heard of XP updates that have changed BIOS settings.

lloydb39, let us know if this is the case.

I'm not sure what I have. Control Panel and System Info both report the sound device as Sigma Tel Audio CODEC. No trace of Sound Blaster, but on the Programs menu I have listings for Creative Software and Sound Blaster Audigy software. These include sound recorders, editors, etc.

I have no clue how to disable the onboard chip or fiddle with the BIOS and would be afraid to in any case.

I am using Easy Capture and "What you hear" is not an option for me.

If you don't see "What you hear", you don't have an Audigy card. What settings do you have available for that Sigma Tel card? Meaning, what options show?

Reboot your system and press the F2 button when you see the prompt and your system will enter into BIOS. If you feel unsure, you should ask a friend to help you. It's not a complicated process and your manual should have info to help you

lloyd, another thing to look at is to go to the Control Panel,Sound and Audio Devices and look at the Audio tab.It will show you the device being used as the default.Hit the drop down arrow at the end of the box and see if you have the Sound Blaster as another choice. If you do try changing the default to the Sound Blaster.

Also try looking in Device Manager under Sound,Video,Game controllers to see if you see anything relating to Sound Blaster or anything with a yellow exclamation mark next to it.If you do chances are it means the drivers aren't loaded correctly and that's why no Sound Blaster (if in fact you do have one).

I also have an Audigy and as Paul said you can use "What you Hear" as the input and you should be able to record from the net no problem,I have.
