medium error

FRK

Question

Trying to burn pictures to CD-R to back up my hard drive. Using Creator Classic. Got Medium Error. Saw post from Oct 11 and followed the directions there which are listed below. That said, I am still getting the error. Have Sony DVD drive CRX320EE. Am very frustrated. How to fix? :)

Win NT/2000/XP Users

Right click on [My Computer] and select [Properties] from the menu. Click [Device Manager] on the [Hardware] tab, then click to open the [iDE ATA/ATAPI (hard disk) controllers] section. You will find: the Primary IDE Channel controller, Secondary IDE Channel controller. Complete the following procedure:

Right click on the Primary IDE controller and select [Properties] from the menu.

Select the [Advanced Settings] tab. Check that the [Transfer Mode] for both devices is set to [DMA if available].

Repeat this for Secondary IDE controller.

Try cdanteek's. If it recognizes your burner when you go to flash, you are good to go. If not, you could try the link I gave you, but cd is probably right on the extra E in the model number.

It isn't really a junk burner for CD's, but you should get a good DVD burner. They are almost as inexpensive as your Sony, and the benefit to cost ratio is immense.

Thanks Grandpa. Any suggestions of brands?

Try a different brand of media. I haven't ever seen that problem when burning CD's, but it is possible that you have some bad disks or they were formatted disks for Drag to Disc. Those would not work in Creator Classic.

Go to Device Manager and uninstall the secondary Ide Controller, reboot, and see if the problem is cured. You can also see if there is updated firmware for that burner, but I be there isn't. I have the same drive and used the CRX320A firmware from Sony's site. The latest update is NYK5. What is yours?

You can find it by clicking on the Roxio icon on you desktop, click on Extras & Utilities, then click on Disc and Device Utility. You should see your Sony burner listed, with the firmware version to the right of it.

Guys - I am a bit of a luddite.

There's only one official firmware from Sony 320EE, the one that came with the drive. Patching to the LiteOn what the drive is, will only get rid of the turbo boost option and remove rip locks and rename it a LiteOn.

I would not encourage anyone to crossflash a drive. That is unless it's a hobby and you can afford to loose the drive. Then after you toast a drive and put out money for a new one, then the work to install it and update it's firmware you have a smile on your face because you like doing it! A sick kind of individual.

Did you ever try Bruce's suggestion? (Go to Device Manager and uninstall the secondary Ide Controller, reboot, and see if the problem is cured)

Right click on the secondary IDE controller and select uninstall from the menu, ok, close out reboot.

The Sony 320EE firmware upgrade RYK4 is on the following site: http://www.touslesdrivers.com/index.php?v_...&v_code=682. You can flash from RYK1 to RYK4. There is firmware for dozens of other Sony CDRW combos and other devices made by Sony on this webpage. The webpage is in French, but the firmware names are the same as in English. I have cross-flashed to the LITE-ON COMBO SOHC-5236K firmware, and got better benchmarks with the Sony firmware using Nero's Test Drive ver. 7. So I would not suggest cross-flashing. I have never had a media error using the RYK4 firmware.

The original poster (OP) hasn't visited the site in almost 8 months, and she solved her problem back in December, but thanks for posting that firmware hack.

That would be how Sony works. If you look at the Firmware Update Instructions, you will see the Sony in my signature. If the firmware won't work in the burner you have, you will no doubt get a message saying so. If it doesn't, and the burner is roached, it is no loss, because the Sony burner that I have in my signature is junk. I use it as a reader only.

If you look in my closet, you will find two of these!

The CRX320EE is based on the LiteOn SOHC-5236K

You can flash your drive with a firmware patched

by OmniPatcher. It will change your drive's identification to "LITE-ON COMBO SOHC-5236K

The original 320E (without an extra "D" or "E" at the end) is a 5232K. Different hardware from the 5235K or the 5236K.

Guys - I am a bit of a luddite. You mean to tell me that this drive I bought is a piece of you know what? That said, what firmware should I use to get it working? Desperately want to back up my hard drive pics and DO NOT want to go through the hassle of buying a new CD ROM drive again. Should i use cdanteek's suggestion or grandpa bruce?
