Windows UI Themes don't apply to EMC?

B R H

Question

Why don't Windows Display Properties, Appearance settings apply to EMC? For example, in Windows Display Properties, I have "Windows and buttons:" set to "Windows Classic style". In all windows except EMC windows, I have square buttons in my Menu Bar for Minimize & Maximize -ing the window. EMC windows use round buttons & have a 3D look. I don't use, & have never used, any sort of "skins".

I don't see the colors your talking about... all i see in my apps are the default xp colors... media player looks like it always has ... go figgure !!!
Think this proves my point in the other thread. Obviously you have tweaked something in your registry to prevent these apps from using skins or perhaps a 'fluke'. In any case, it's time to reinstall Windows.

In my screenshot, I changed my theme to Windows Classic. Top most app is Seamonkey which uses the system theme, then Adobe PSE 4 unselected color, then WMP10 (11 beta defaulted to Vista black on my machine), then Videowave 9 unselected color and last Yahoo Messenger selected (top most app) color.

Granted there is an option in Yahoo to use the 'system theme' which I normally use.

I haven't noticed any issues whatsoever with IE7 & EMC 9.

FYI, in WMP 11 there is a setting for Classic Menu. It's not 100% classic, but it's close - at least you get real menus even if the colors don't do what they're supposed to!

I don't understand why this skin stuff is popular. A consistent GUI is important to actually get any work done on a PC. I guess kids these days just want their PCs to look like shiny toys instead.

Not _another_ upgrade ! Jeez in 18 months I went through v.7.0, v.7.5, v.8.0 and now I'm on v.9.0 around $200 later. I wish they would have fixed all of the bugs in v.8.0 and made the upgrade available however that never happened.

As to the skinning, I completely agree. It's all mucked up. Give me the Silver XP skin and be done with it. I've tried Vista (RTM) on 3 different systems and it offers me nothing. XP is by far more easily configured and useful. And now that you mention it, Vista reminds me of a hybrid between Linux' KDE desktop and the Mac OSX.

Dude.. I have a simlar issue... every time I install emc9 it forces me to win xp theme.. regardless of what theme I have as my default.... currently the xp classic... Not sure this is similar to your issue or not.. but I'm very dismayed that emc9 forces this upon me... I don't use skins and never have .... I install with xp classic and then reboot as requested and then i'm greeted with that fatty flobby xp round bloated buttons all over everything ... I hate it... I've left tech support messages since before the 1st of the month and have NOTHING... other than they keep closing my ticket.

I'm so 'friggin glad' that there is someone else reporting this... as I was thinkin I was the lone wolf out there. !!!!

Are you saying that this is a FUNCTION ( guess i spelled that incorrectly first N should be K ) of the software as planned ? If so... where do I get my money back ?

You might have misunderstood my post. EMC 9 does nothing to my desktop. I still have my Classic desktop. It only "skins" when I open EMC 9, and that IS by design of the software.

I know, that's why I put "upgrade" in quotes. I can't stand it when companies charge for bug fixes.

I too wish I would have skipped the intermediate versions & waited for 9 or 10 instead! I think I've purchased every single version that was ever available! I'm done with that.

I think I can get Vista for free with my recent new PC purchase, but I'm not eager to "upgrade" that either. I'm sure MS will sneak in a few bugs, I mean "updates", for XP that can't be rolled back so that we will soon have no choice though. My old PC ran XP 24/7 since some of the beta versions were available. It was completely stable until sometime last year. I've formatted the drives & started over & it still ends up needing a reboot every week or so. I'm having similar troubles with my new PC. XP is so loaded with patches that it's hard (not worth the time) to figure out which one is causing the trouble, but I know it's one of them!

It's a conspiracy I tell ya! :)

This has nothing to do with 'system themes'. Skinning is done by individual applications liek Windows Media Player. Sonic/Roxio have designed their application with a 'skin'. That's all there is to it. However, I totally agree with you . I hate it. What happened to a consistent look and feel of the OS???

Adobe skins their apps dark grey

Sonic/Roxio is skinned purple/blue

Yahoo Messenger is another purple

The new Windows Media Player 11 is BLACK like Vista's theme - hate it!

WinXP desktop is beginning to look more like the Fab5 came in to redecorate or even worse... like linux!

I am not overly fond of skins, either. I got used to the ones with EMC 9, but like the OP, I am a Windows Classic person. I have always detested the look of the XP theme.

Rest easy... I have win/classic as my default and when I install EMC9... EVERYTHING changes to xp BLOATED theme.. start menu... task bar... all windows... ARGH ... I change it back to classic mode.. and upon reboot... I'M BLOATED AGAIN... its off my system... and won't be back on... I'm still passing some gas about it... its on the shelf as a reminder of a bad purchase... its install made bad changes to my sonic label writer program that required a re-install... bad bad software...

Man... everthing is consistent with my system... ( we've chatted about Roxio emc9 ) I have no issues with any prog's your talking about.. they all look the same on my system... same meaning.. i select xp claassic they all looked classic

i've installed and looked at yahoo messenger and its funky... but sonic, adobe writer and reader, media player are all cool with my default classic settings... none of the 'colors your stating' maybe the software developers need to expand upon what machines they test on...

Course we have the issue with IE 7 .... GASP ! .... take care and have a good weekend !
