Question

I made a data DVD (following these guidelines:

http://forums.support.roxio.com/index.php?showtopic=13012

).

After I entered my password to decrypt, I got a "Warning."

"The following disk images failed to mount.

(dvd name).dm no mountable file systens"

Does anyone know why?

Mac os 10.4.8. Power PC, G5.

thanks!

doh! it happened again! tried to burn the DVD again. This time i removed all the aliases, thinking that would fix it. i still got the same issue. and yes, dm seems to stand for dmg. errrr why??

the burnt the dmg itself so that the icon layout and size would remain intact. And that worked fine on a sample burn (just empty folder icons) using a CD-R, but for some reason, not on the DVD! Could it be that the DVD hierarchy is just too complicated!!? thanks!

bro, that did it! thanks! all i had to do was change the filename of the DVD I was going to burn. Not ever once did I recieve a message saying that the title was too long. They should really do something about that. Oh well. I had to make a whole new dmg though, I couldnt just rename it after dragging it to my HD. THANKS! They burnt swimmingly! =)

Let's go through this again. Create a temporary partition (or empty disc image) in the Finder. You might try using Toast's temporary partition command in the Utilities window instead of using Disk Utility to create this image file. Drag in and organize the files and folders the way you want them. Dragging in aliases is a problem because they will keep pointing to the original files rather than the ones in the partition. So you'll need to create new aliases in the partition itself.

When you are done with this, select Mac & PC as the format in the Toast Data window. Click New Disc (and give the disc a name). Now drag in the contents from the mounted partition. You'll see all your folders listed in the Toast window.

Burn your DVD or choose Save as Disc Image from the File menu. If you choose the latter you can mount that .toast image file to see how it all looks. When you are ready, you can burn that disc image with the Image File setting in the Toast Copy window.

You cannot burn a file with a .dm extension and have the Mac do anything about opening it. It won't know what a .dm file is. Copying that file from a disc to the hard drive and then adding the "g" so it is a .dmg file should enable the OS to mount it from the hard drive, though.

if by robooting, you mean restarting my computer, than yes I just tried that. but to no avail. =(

I have no idea where to start trouble shooting because I am not that familiar with how toast works. I don't know which variable to start at. Is it because I burnt a DVD? corrupt dmg? I only have 4 more gold archival DVD's and I don't want to waste them with trial and error! thanks so much for your help!

Could it have anything to do with the fact that I set up aliases from within the dmg? I am backing up a series of back ups from CD-R's to one DVD-R. One or two huge files are represented so I replaced all but one of them with aliases all linking back to the one that I DID include in the dmg. Could that be an issue with burning? Can you not set up aliases on a CD-R or DVD-R?

I've never encountered a file name with a .dm extension. I don't know what that is. Did the g somehow get clipped off the end of a .dmg extension name? If that happened then the OS is as confused as I am about what to do with a .dm file when it actually is a .dmg file.

Also, Freshburn's original advice was for you to drag the mounted image file contents to the Data window. It sounds like you dragged the .dmg file itself rather than the mounted image contents.
