"Backup Formatting" CD for Backup withing Software Program

jimgilmer

Question

OK, this question requires a little background in order to get to the question:

Until about 3 weeks ago, I had been running W2000Pro and IE 6 along with Easy CD Creator 5x. I primarily used the V5 to "format" the disc, and then take the formatted disc and use it to back up my entries into various applications. For example, after completing my entries on my Quicken program, I would go to "file", then "backup", and then would insert my "formatted" disk into the "D" Drive, click on the backup dialog box within Quicken, and voila --I had my Qdata backed up to the last entry I had just completed.

Now, about 3 weeks ago, I upgraded to XP Pro, and IE 7.0. When I did all my homework and research on upgrading to XP, one of MS Windows' sites told me ahead of time that Easy CD Creator 5.x would not run with XP. And that turned out to be exactly correct. So I removed it, using the Add/Remove Software feature in the Control Panel.

So now I have been backing up Quicken and other applications using the Windows Explorer/Send to CD/Burn CD feature available on XP. That's a lot more time consuming the the method with ECDC5.x I had been using all these years. As I understand it, what I was doing was "packet writing", which is suppose to be unstable at best, and is virtually passe now.

So to my question: Do any of the later versions of Eeasy CD/DVD Creator have this same ability to "format" the CD as ECDC5.x did? If not, do any of the versions have a method of backup that will allow me to backup within the application, without having to find the correct backup file on windows explorer, sending it to CD, and then burning it?

I'll appreciate any information/help

Jim

I can't speak to whether IE7 will make ECDC5 gag and choke, but I can tell you that ECDC5.1 and later run just fine on my WinXP system (both sp1 and sp2). If you want to try that, following are some generic instructions that may help:

Roxio Easy CD Creator Platinum 5

Installation Steps

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You must be on at least version 5.1 to run under WinXP. Version 5.1 and later run just fine under WinXP/sp1.

In order to run under WinXP/sp2, you may have to do a complete uninstall and reinstall AFTER applying the sp2 update. Please be advised that Roxio has said they do not support Version 5 running under WinXP/sp2. But many folks have gotten it to work successfully.

You may want to check under “Recorder Support” on the Roxio web site to see which version first supported your cdrw drive, if you have a newer device. You will need to use the actual drive-id string found under “properties” for your cdrw drive.

Do a complete and clean uninstall of any previous versions of Easy CD Creator.

You can do this via "Control Panel" - "Add/Remove Software".

You can also download and run “roxizap” to cleanout any remnants left behind (although this may not be necessary).

Get it here: http://tools.roxio.com/support/tools/roxizap.exe

Be sure no other packet writing software (such as InCD from Nero) is installed.

Download the updates for Platinum 5 from the Roxio site.

Currently, you want 4, including: 5.3.5, photo, video, & 5.3.5driveup.

Note: if you are installing the “Basic” version, you only need the “Basic” 5.3.5 update and the same driveup535 described above. You cannot apply Platinum updates to a "Basic" program installation.

Install ECDC 5 from the cd.

If you get a warning message from WinXP/sp2 that the software may cause instability problems on your system you can tell it to install anyway - but you are proceeding at your own risk, since Roxio has not ensured the software will run under all WinXP/sp2 situations.

If the install says there are no supported recorders – tell it to install anyway.

(the updates will add support for some newer drives)

DO NOT REBOOT - Once again - DO NOT REBOOT!

Run all the updates – be sure to run 5.3.5 before the 5.3.5 driveup.

Then Reboot.

Yes. I'll leave the lecture about packet writing to Lynn....

Drag to Disk is the program that formats the CD and I know that's included in version 7 and I believe it's in 8 and 9 also.

Version 7.5 and later versions also contain a Sonic Backup program that might be useful to you. Read about it for version 9 here: http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/creator/...res.html#backup

While we are at it, IE 7 will interfere with Roxio, and no doubt other applications. I think EMC 9 can deal with IE 7. Thus, either get the latest OR somehow get hold of a copy of IE 6 and install it. (I've made sure IE 7 cannot contaminate my WinXP SP2 computer.)

Apparently either this post was moved here, or you missed this pinned post at the top of this Forum on the dangers of Pakect-Writing:

I'm not sure about XP PRO, but I can attest to what Rich suggests also, as I am running Easy CD Creator Platium on one of my computers that is running WIN XP Home (SP2) and also running EMC 7.5. HOWEVER---I am NOT running IE7. That is the main difference.

I am running WinXP/Pro - sp2 on my laptop and ECDC5 runs there just fine alongside EMC7.1.
