Wierd result using Toast 7... help?

yeled

Question

Hi everyone,

I used dvdsp4 to create a dual layer dvd. (I'm a little bit of a newbie, sorry, but...) I thought I had asked dvdsp to create a disk image, but it created a video_ts and an audio_ts.

The simulation worked fine, as did the apple dvd player loading the video_ts.

The burn went fine (using a lacie burner).

The project is composed of 60 sequences on separate tracks. There are three menus. All of the sequences can be accessed fine. The problem comes in when I want to play all, and skip to the next chapter. The end jump just doesn't work. It seems to go to a random track. Well, not random because the same result happens every time. I should say that it goes to a wildly unexpected track, and certainly not what I specified. In every other respect, the disk works.

I tried to adjust the burning speed, but the settings allow me to burn at best, or 2x. I tried different media, but the problem persists.

Are there other settings i should try? Can anyone offer any suggestions?

THANKS!

I suspect this is something related to the authoring of the DVD. You might want to post on the DVDSP forums. I assume there will be some users there that have a little more experience with Apple's software.

John, thanks for the reply.

The disk works just fine in simulation mode. But is there a way to burn slower? Toast only gives me the choice of 2x or best. How can I burn at 1x?

And, is getting a video_ts folder the only way to bring it into toast? I'm not sure what an img file is or how to produce it in dvdsp4. THANKS

What setting did you use in Toast to burn the disc? What brand DL media are you using?

The normal way to burn a VIDEO_TS is using that setting in the Video window. But you also could choose DVD-ROM UDF in the Data window. Click New Disc then drag in the VIDEO_TS folder. I don't know why that might change the result, but it's worth a try.

Another option is to use Toast to Save as Disc Image and then use that to burn your DVD with the Image File setting in the Copy window.

The available speeds are what the disc and the drive tell Toast are available.

You might try turning off Buffer Underrun Protection to see if that changes anything. Sorry that there isn't a known answer to your question. It could be a problem between the media with the DVD player that has nothing to do with your Mac, the VIDEO_TS, the drive or Toast.

Hi! Thanks for your reply. As far as toast settings, I really am not certain. I was not aware that there were settings other than burn speed. What should I be looking for? I just imported as a disk image. I tried 2 types of what I believed were good quality disks.... sony + memorex.

Can you explain further as to how to use save as a disc image? Do you mean import the video_ts, save as a disk image, then burn that way?

Any idea what turning off buffer underrun might do?

And why can't I change the speed to 1x? THANK YOU!!!

In your first post you said that you had tried to save a disc image with DVDSP but received a VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS instead. In this post you said you imported a disc image. I'm now confused about whether you have a disc image file or whether you have VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders.

If you have a disc image then you burn it to disc using the Image File setting of the Toast Copy window. Ignore my previous post. If you have a VIDEO_TS folder then use the DVD Video from VIDEO_TS setting in the Toast Video window or use the Data window as I previously described.

You can't change the speed to 1x because your drive has checked the disc and found that it doesn't support 1x burning. Toast has no say in this.

You didn't mention what brand of media you are using. The only brand of DL media that seems to be reliable is Verbatim DVD+R DL. If you are using anything else I suggest getting a Verbatim disc to try.

I've read a few posts where people had trouble burning discs and they were advised to turn off buffer underrun. I don't know what difference that might make. I doubt if you'd experience a buffer underrun error burning at the 2.4x speed of a DVD+R DL disc, so it might be something else to try. Could be worthless advice, too.
