Compression problems?

drinkingbird

Question

Using MyDVD in EMC9 to convert dvr-ms to DVD-Video discs. Converts the files to MPEG2 fine (they play perfect on the PC). But the resulting DVDs have audio out of sync by 2-3 seconds.

Now, from what I can tell, it must be compressing the audio. When putting two 1 hour shows on a disc, the rendering is pretty quick and shows the grey box, which means its not compressing the video. But since a dvd can only hold 90 mins without compressing, something must be compressed, so I have to assume it is compressing the PCM audio to AC3. It does this even when you only try to put one hour on a DVD, so must be the default (was using "fit to disc" in both cases). I will try another with custom settings to leave the PCM audio, but that doesn't really solve the issue as then I can only fit the 90 mins.

If I could fit 2 hours on a DVD and have the quick burn time (20 mins or so) of just compressing the audio, that would be great, but obviously the sync issue is a show stopper. Any suggestions to fix this? Again the MPEGs are fine so its not happening in the conversion from DVR-MS to MPEG, just the rendering/burning process.

I could convert to MPEG and save off as a dual layer ISO to avoid all compression then burn it with CloneDVD2 but trying to find a one stop simple place to do this.

I've read that Nero had a similar issue over the summer but its since been resolved. Guess I can give that a try too.

Not everyone has this problem. I converted twenty 2hr 8mm tapes for my nephew. It was taking way too long to transfer as DV AVI so I bought a set top recorder to cut down my processing time. I transferred the DVD VR recorderings to MPEG and not once did I get out of sync issue. MyDVD did transcode the audio to AC3 with no problem.

Now if we could only find out WHY some have this out of sync issue and others don't...

It transferred the DVR-MS to MPEG perfectly. But when compressing to fit 2 x 1 hour shows on the dvd is when the sync dies (even if burned to an image). Seems to be related to the fact that its only compressing the audio.

Just went to Nero and it works perfectly, so guess that solves it.

The software is designed to fit 1 hour of video at good quality, when you try to add more then an hour then the quality is compromised. What you can try is to create a disc image of the project and then use Disc Copier to burn it to DVD and let Disc Copier compress it.

Understood there will be some quality loss in the compression, but having the audio off by several seconds? Why even offer compression in MyDVD if it can't do it?

It would be easiest to use disc copier compile feature to just do it all but when I try to add DVR-MS files to it, it just hangs at like 12% adding the file.
