Brendon
Hi Elvira, If Win98 is slow, that will be because the computer it is on is slow. If you put Windows XP on that same computer it will go even slower (if it goes at all). Windows XP is a very useful operating system, but it slows things down so much you need a really fast computer to run it on. If you aren't going to get a MUCH faster computer, stick with Windows 98. If you're getting a new computer and it has XP on it already, go for it. Happy everything to you and your family, too.
Guest ml
Son wants to buy him a new one for Xmas, an seen one with Windows XP Media Center 2005, is that version of Windows any good?, Are you asking if you should buy a new computer for Christmas with WinXP Media Center 2005? Any computer you buy will be much faster than the one you've got. If you're using the computer primarily to surf the internet, buy one with at least 512 MB RAM, 1 GB or more is better. That will make the internet appear to be faster. I'd go to a couple of computer stores, tell them what your budget is and what you'll be using the internet for and write down their recommendations for specifications. If your son is going to be using the computer primarily for playing games, then, depending on his age, he might be able to tell you what he needs. Thanks Brendon: Hubby PC with W98 will be donated to one of our Schools, but they are several Windows versions, mine has WME and is fine for me, but is Off Limits to Hubby and Son, as they don't have much PC knowledge, every time they use it they goof and I need to repair their mistakes, so they need a new one. My ? is what Version of WXP's is the best, Professional, Plain XP, or Media Center 2005, or .... Always depending on you, Please tell me. Elvira. The PC with W98 will be donated to one of our Schools. Brendon
Hi Elvira, I understand what you're wanting now. I have XP Pro, because my machine works hard and I do a lot of networking. My wife's laptop does a lot of email, word processing, spreadsheets, printing, solitaire and Magic Mah-jong. She's very happy with XP Home. It's really a matter of "Horses for Courses" so you should have a look at what the two versions offer and see if you need the more expensive one. There's an official comparison chart available HERE. Brendon
Elvira, Thanks for your good wishes, and thanks for looking after your hubby so well for so long. Hold on to that set. Apart from being an heirloom it will also be valuable. Yes, Jet is where the term 'jet black' came from. It is quite hard and takes a great polish.
