Problem copying files to DVD

Jamesck

Question

I have just bought a new PC with Windows XP home which came with Easy Media Creator 7 Basic DVD edition. I have a Sony DVD RW AW-G170A drive. When I try to copy files to a DVD-RW using the 'copy files to disc' I get the error message 'invalid command operation code - illegal request [05/20/00]. I have given up on the drag to disc as this says the dvd is not formatted and then will not format this for me ('the operation failed as the drive received an invalid command').

I can copy files to CD RW ok and I have copy music tracks from my Itunes to the DVD RW ok as well. I know that the drive must therefore be ok and the DVD is ok.

Any thoughts please?

Many thanks

I know that I have had a simular problem and if I remember right, it always seem to happen when I had first used Nero for one project, closed it out, and then tried to use Roxio for another project. For example, in one session, I use Nero for recoding a DVD. Next I use DVD Shrink to compress the project. Then, for whatever reason I decide to use Roxio to burn the resulting DVD. I will get that some funky message regarding the operation or that the disc is not formatted or something.

However, if I shut down the computer and reboot BEFORE I use Roxio to burn, I don't have the error messages. It seems like there are some compatibility issues and the programs don't even have to be running at the same time.

So if you start a project with Roxio and don't use any other Multimedia program, it seems to be less errors. But if you use another program before Roxio in the same session, you can get some funky error messages.

P.S. I seemed to have more media errors with Roxio, especially if I use Memorex or Sony discs. Oddly, I have had virtually no problems with Imation.

Actually Jamesck said nothing of movies so your reply citing 2 other products has no relevance to this post…

It sounds like James is using XP Burning which is incapable of burning to any DVD media.

I get the hint: Don't mention other products. However, I thought it important to mention that the use of another multimedia program before using Roxio in the same session, can cause errors. I presume because XP doesn't have native ASPI drivers. When another program such as "...." is used, it will use the ASPI that came with the program. Then when Roxio fires up, the ASPI that was loaded by "..." causes problems because it is telling Roxio to use that ASPI when there shouldn't be one. Just a theory, but never the less, an observation that I have made when using one program first and then switching to Roxio in the same session.

I don't remember what kind of error message is displayed, but if you use some kind of Infotool, it will tell you what media and what functions your DVD writer will support. You may be trying to use the wrong media.

Hi everyone - thanks for the messages so far.

The computer is brand new and only has Roxio installed - there is no Nero software and Roxio is the only CD/DVD burning software on it as far as I can tell. I have used Sony DVD-RW and just tried a Panasonic DVD-RW with no luck and the same error messages.

I have searched on google using the error message and come accross this website where others may have have a similar problem (http://club.cdfreaks.com) and it mentions something about the ASPI drivers conflicting but am not really sure what to do if that is the root of the problem...

Any more thoughts?

Really appreciate your help here...

Hi Jamesck

I have just had the very same problem. Roxio pre-installed on a brand new computer and will not write to DVD RW. Got the same error messages as you did. I've now had 3 "restores" in conjunction with my supplier's Tech Support. Roxio was also impossible to un-install. Left Drag-to-Disk and couldn't be got rid of.

Following a restore, we didn't re-install Roxio. Used another piece of software which works fine. It also enabled two other pieces of software to burn to DVD RW without any problems. I'm using Verbatim discs.

Still don't know how to resolve the issue.

I know a late reply, but do you have the Foxconn P9657AA-8KS2H motherboard ?

I have seen 1 or 2 of these motherboards with that dvd writer that have the problem with writing to DVD and get the same error. (writing CD's dont seem to have that problem)

it might be down to the controller that the dvd writer is installed on that only emulates IDE.

i've not come across a solution other then replacing motherboard (different model) or using SATA DVD writer. :)

I've responded to James post as I have had the very same problem.

I've just checked my motherboard disk and I have - guess what - Foxconn P9657AA motherboard. You're right about the CDs - I could copy to CD and CD RW

Unless you had Nero installed, there are no ASPI layers on your computer. Windows XP does not install one.

The only other way that there would be an ASPI layer on your computer is if you installed one, yourself. I installed ForceASPI 1.8 about 2 years ago, when I was having some burning problems. I have since then, reformatted my hard drive, and I did not istall the ASPI layer again. I have had no problems burning.

Hi - no I have not installed one although I am wishing that I had something else installed instead as this is very frustrating! lol

I have found it's down to the jmicron driver ... :) latest available here

if set to IDE it writes perfect, but on the version R1.17.08 there was DVD play back problem where it wasn't smooth

I have not tested the playback of DVD's with the version R1.17.11 that is currently on their website (ftp)

Hope that helps

Mobos can be the cause of some strange problems - glad it looks as if it's being sorted

I remember my last board - it would never boot from DVD (even commercial bootable ones that came with Linux Format magazine) - never did get that cured
