Weird CD drive problem

Recommended Posts

Hello all, first time here in a long while. I am looking for some assistance with an odd problem I am having with my DVD/CD drive.

Basically if I boot the PC normally, i.e.- no media in the drive, when I do insert a disc in the drive the PC will not see any info on the disc. The drive letter is there though.

Now, if I boot the PC with a disc in the drive all is good.

I replaced the drive once as I thought the drive had failed but that has turned out to not be the case. I am running XP Pro with most of the current updates installed.

I'd appreciate some pointers or maybe some URL's that I could browse for some info.

Thanks in advance.

We'll need your computer spces, the version of EMC you're running and any competitive and pre-installed software you have on your system now. Most likely it's a conflict on your system due to similar software.

OK, well the system in general is pretty basic. Motherboard is by ASUS, 1GHz P3, two 60GB Seagate drives, a BENQ DVD-CD drive, and a Zip drive.

Software is straightforward too. Windows XP Pro SP2 is the OS. I actually don't see any EMC software on the machine although I used to have EMC 4 or 5....it's has been awhile. The only other CD-related software I see installed is by Nero; Nero Express v.5. Windows Media Player 10 is installed too.

If you have EMC's Drag to Disc installed along with Nero's InCD, you'll definitely have problems. You'll need to remove Drag to Disc or InCD. Personally, I don't have any installed as I'm one of the many who have no trust in packet writing software from anyone.

To suggest from your original post---If you boot your computer "Without" any CD in the optical drive, and then AFTER the computer has completely booted to your desktop, and THEN insert a CD in the drive, you should geta default MS Windows screen that shows all the various options or conditions as to how or what you want to do with the CD that's in the drive. (i.e. "Open Folder To View Files"; "Show Options"; "Play DVD" (several options depending on what programs you have installed on the computer to view DVD's); and "Take No Action". Depending on what and how much you have on that particular media in the drive, it might take a little time for the computer to check the media and bring up that screen, so be patient.

If you have a CD or some media in the drive BEFORE you boot up, you will NEVER get this options screen. So you would have to open Windows Explorer, go to that drive to see all the folders and files on the Media and then decide what you want to do. (i.e. open a file; play a file; move somethng etc.).

Redwagon:

Yes, I understand what you are referring to. I never get the default MS Windows screen with the options unless I leave some media physically in the drive before I power down the PC. If I boot with an empty drive, no media inserted, it will never read a disc that I insert later. Data or music. The drive letter shows up yet when I click it, it will show no 'files'. If on the other hand I boot with a known good disc already inserted, the contents of that disc will be shown and I will be able to access it. I am certainly at a loss for what to do! I did, just for grins, remove the Nero software but it did not help matters.

I think I may have a look in the BIOS settings to see if I have something set incorrectly there.

Thanks.
