EMC9 not seeing attached Samsung SE-S184 as LightScribe printer

BobCrabtree

Question

No problems using this latest-gen USB 2.0 burner to create LightScribe discs when using the supplied Nero suite on another PC (actually, another instance of XP on a different partition of this PC) but EMC9 simply doesn't offer me a LightScribe printer to use with the Samsung on this PC/installation of XP.

EMC9 was installed BEFORE the Samsung was attached but I have since run the latest LightScribe installer app from the LightScribe site (LSS V1.4.124.1) and that hasn't helped.

No different even after I'd installed the LightScribe Simple Labeler for Windows or after then installing the free version of SURETHING 4SE - these apps don't see a LightScribe burner as being attached to the PC.

Any clues about what's going on or whether the Samsung's LightScribe capabilities are currently only usable under the supplied Nero OEM 6 suite?

Oh, and for the record, the Samsung is seen by the system as being an SH-S182M and has firmware revision SB03.

TIA

I went to the Samsung web site and they did not list that firmware version. Where did you get it? It may be that Nero has modified the firmware but I doubt it. You said that the computer sees it as the 182M; is that what it is?

Thanks for the speedy response! Fortunately, I've cracked the problem or, rather, used advice contained on Microsoft's site (courtesy of CD freaks) to crack it.

I can now see the Samsung within all LightScribe-capable labelling apps installed here and mentioned in my original posting.

The problem was that I had auto-run and auto-play turned off and LightScribe needs these to be turned on.

I'm not too happy about turning these on - though I do, of course, know that if I hold down the shift key as the disc drawer closes, then auto-start/play is disabled for that one time. But I'd rather just have it disabled permanently.

The only reason I wanted to test EMC9's LightScribe capabilities is so that I could tell people who might prefer using that software, rather than the supplied Nero OEM suite, whether they'd be able to burn LightScribe labels - and I now know that the answer is yes.

The MS KB Article gives you details of how to tweak Windows registry to restore the default settings (not something I'm concerned about doing, but others, perhaps, should be - so back up of the registry before making changes).

However, I realised after doing all this that Microsoft's own TweakUI for XP applet would have let me make these changes without touching the registry. Do'oh!

TweakUI and the rest of the PowerToys for XP can be downloaded from Microsoft here.

The other one on that page that I regard as a must-have is CommandPromptHere - utterly invaluable, for lots of situations but I mostly use command prompts to get an editable listing of a directory's contents - so I can easily grab the names of all image files for inclusion in reviews and other longish articles.

One thing to know, though, if following MS's advice doesn't work (or, indeed, if TweakUI doesn't do the trick - and that, now, would be my suggested route), then uninstall the burner from Device Manager, and allow it to re-install automagically.

With a USB burner, allowing a re-install just means turning it off and turning it on again; with IDE or SATA, it would require a reboot for the burner to be recognised.

It's also possible that you'll need to do a reboot even for a USB burner but, if so, you'll be advised of that after you turn the burner back on.

As for the firmware version - the Nero Tools supplied with the burner identify it as the model number described, as does Samsung's online utility.

I'd installed Samsung's LiveUpdate tool (from the supplied CD) and this also recognised the burner the same way and discovered that the latest firmware was available to replace SB02 version that the burner had when I got it.

Oh and DVDInfo Pro (my own paid-for version and the version supplied with EMC9) also sees the burner as an SH-S182M.

I don't think this sort of discrepancy between the stated model number and the "discovered" model number is that unusual in external burners - what all the diagnostics software sees, I think, is the IDE drive within.

Thanks again for your posting.

Cheers

I'll try to check this and report back.

I have installed and used LightScribe for 2 DVDs - 1 that I had already burned a MyDVD file to and one that I plan on burning it to. Roxio label worked fine but now my system freezes (crashes actually) every time I try to load it....any ideas?
