m2v where are you?

StevesVideo

Question

EMC9 will not recognize .m2v files that I was able to use in MyDVD 5.2

When I directly a input file name into "add file name: " I get a popup that says "file can not be edited and has not been added."

This same file was used in MyDVD to create a DVD without any problems. I am unable to add/import/identify files to be used that have been encoded into .m2v and .wav files.

The only reason I purchased EMC9 was to enhance menus that was not possible in MyDVD.

I don't want to edit, just burn the already encoded production. Please help! Thank you, Steve

So? Just proves that it really isn't an M2V. That it really is an MPG file with the wrong extension. BY DEFINITION, M2V do NOT have audio.

www.afterdawn.com

.m2v is an MPEG-2 video file that contains only the video and no audio or subtitle data whatsoever. Typically accompanied by a separate audio file.

.m2v files are extremely common when using DVD authoring tools as they typically require audio and video to be stored in separate files (demuxing), a process that can be achieved with variety of video editors, such as TMPGEnc.

No need. I have exposed my ignorance, you have exposed your expertise :-)

I naively thought that if a downloaded file had a .m2v extension, then that is what it was. Why would people put that file extension on their downloads?

Sorry if the menu item is confusing, I have not had the opportunity to try the menu function because the program will not accept the m2v (renamed .mpg .mpeg .m2p) files to allow me to create a DVD.

Ahhhh, I understand now. I thought maybe you had tried other files and did not like the menu functions. My bad.

I have not had any experience with m2v files. When I capture now, I capture as .avi files.

So, is there something that I should know about deleting the old MyDVD and installing the new version 9 of EMC to work around this problem. Could lingering old files be an issue??? I have an email ticket in with Roxio support but so far no reply. Or do I just go out and buy a first rate program and stop playing with this less than cooperative software. I am seeing Adobe or Gear in my future... Sorry, just getting very frustrated. Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you, Steve

contrary to what GGRussell suggests these .m2v files contain both video and audio
Perhaps in this case, the file really isn't a true M2V?? Most software that creates M2V files removes the audio into a separate file.

Wikipedia:

M2V is an MPEG-2 Packetized Elementary Stream. It contains only video related data.

M2V files are normally destined to be multiplexed (muxed), which is the process of adding audio data and perhaps other streams such as subtitles, before use. M2Vs are created by demultiplexing (demuxing) an existing MPEG-2, or by converting another video format to MPEG-2.

Same here. Does anyone know of a way to convert an .m2v file to something EMC 9 will recognize without degrading?

I don't know if this will work - but it's worth a try (found online)

"....m2v is an MPEG2 format videostream. There is no conversion necessary. Simply change the extender from ".m2v" to either ".MPG" or ".MPEG" and any software DVD player should play the file - as will Windows Media Player, if you've installed (and registered to Windows) the required MPEG2 filters..."

Unfortunately, changing the extension may not help that much since the M2V is just video with no audio. You 'might' be able to edit movie and add the WAV file back to the movie, but syncing the video/audio could be a problem.

I've actually made this work for me by just renaming .m2v to .mpg and used the files both in v 7/7.5 and v 8, so it should work in v 9 also. I did it this way as I was doing some PIP, and needed the audio for the overlay one to be silent.

My files are genuine m2v files, video only with separate wav audio file created by Procoder pulled from Edius. I have been using MyDVD for quit awhile and only upgraded to EMC 9 with the promise of better menu creation. So far this has been a disaster and I now have 3 separate projects that are edited and just waiting for authoring to complete. Roxio's time is getting short. Any other suggestions on how to make EMC play nice or is it time to flush the software and move on?

The MyDVD in version 9 has better menu creation than any other EMC version that I have used, dating back to version 7.

I guess I am having a problem understanding why you don't think it does. If it doesn't meet your expectations, maybe it is time to move on. I certainly wouldn't hold it against you.

Right; the audio is an .ac3 file.

I would never have guessed I could just rename the .m2v to .mpg and EMC would accept it. I had tried that in some other software and it did not work. When I do this, MyDVD in EMC 9 recognizes the movie as included - its length shows up correctly in the status bar at the bottom, and it registers its format (NTSC and, in this case, 16:9).

However, I can't do anything with it. When I go to the "Movie" pane and click "Edit movie" the software hangs entirely and I have to use Alt-Ctrl-Del to end the program. (The same thing happens if I click "preview" - the Preview panel opens but when I try to play the movie it hangs.) Therefore I don't know whether I would be able to add the audio track as you suggest.
