cd/dvd writer

Rita

Question

I create an audio cd, for the disc is not recognized. Is it a problem with Windows xp service pack? I don't believe windows will allow me to install the proper drive. I can play an audio cd, but it will not recognize CD-R, or CD-RW...I have tried many. The reply is there is no disc in player. I have service pack 2 for windows. The model on the device manager states the device is Toshiba SD-R5372 USB Device TU55. Device Name //./CdRom3. The machine is from Pacific Digital and is 16X USB DVD-RW. Can someone please help me.

First of all Rita, go to add/remove programs in Control Panel and take out Internet Explorer 7

E(asy) CD (Creator 5 is an older version - all the program suites up to 6 were 'ECD' - 7 onwards became EMC (E(asy) M(edia) C(reator)

What we need to know next is which version you are using - 6, 7, 7.5, 8 or 9

It is the 7 basic

Taking out Internet Explorer 7 in add/remove

I am currently running into problems, I found a toshiba update for SD-R5372 TU55, but it changed my recorder to another type. I need to reboot and try to find the old system.

The change in type number (I presume it's the TU 55 part) is probably down to the upgrade to a 16 speed DVD-R - I wouldn;t worry too much about that provided it still works.

If the maker changed to Samsung, that would be normal (it was developed according to the website as "...the first DVD recordable drive developed by Toshiba Samsung Storage Technologies (TSST) to be distributed under the Toshiba brand name...", so if it now says it's a 'Samsung' that's fine

'Samsung blue, everybody knows one' :)

Okay, IE 7 is out of my system, and I was able to download the SD-R5372 TU55 from the site provided. Thank you so much. So what do I do now? Previously I somehow had a TSST but it was a different driver.

You laugh ...well it is nice to get a laugh out of all this, one way to keep one's sanity. The machine still does not recognize a Cd-r. The driver is stuck on Microsoft, 7/1/2001, 5.1.2535.0, Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows Publisher. Perhaps that is the SP2 problem?

By the way, I really do appreciate all this help.

Only reason for the laugh Rita is I have a habit of soming out with some atrocious puns (or is that an atrocious habit for puns)

Anyway - the MS driver isn't really relevant in this case - you've upgraded the firmware and uninstalled IE & which is fine so far

Can Windows access the disc at all (pre-recorded discs and so on) and play a music disc? If so, then that end is working.

If it can - then the drive is fine and so we can ignore that end of things and concentrate on getting the rest to work.

If you put in a fresh blank, straight from the spindler and do nothing to it, go yo the Home menu and the utilities section and see if it reports a blank CD

The internal disc player, which is a Toshiba SD-C2612 will play and audio, but the external Toshiba SD-R5372 TU55 will not even recognize an audio disc. It will not recognize a blank cd also. Sorry to make this complicated. I do believe there is a problem with the two devices trying to utilize the same drive.

Oh, each has a different drive letter. D for the internal and E for the SD-R5372. :)

If the drive won't recognise a commercial CD there's something strange happening - does it even recognise a data disc if you put one in?

There are a couple of possibilities here - one is a faulty drive and the other is a dirty lens on the laser (use a CD cleaning disc to check)

Did it play at all before the firmware upgrade?

That disc should do - try that and then try an audio disc again

I use FF myself - but IE is still on the computer - but so long as you uninstalled IE7, that shouldn't cause any problems.

Just one quick thought - is there another computer that you can plug the external drive into and see if it works there? That should eliminate either the drive or your system

I went into run regdit and went through to cdburning and changed the drive type from 1 to 2. When I placed in an audio cd it asked me to choose a player, so I chose Roxio. This led me to the create cd, so I am attempting to copy from SD-5372 to SD-5372. It read the information, asked for a blank CD-R, was making noise, states 50% complete, but write speed has stayed on 0%. I have not received a pop up stating no disc. But over 15 minutes have passed and the light on the device has gone off.

I do not any Internet explorer now. Do I need it for Roxio?

I am getting some action from the Roxio and it acknowledges a blank cd now.

I am try to copy some saved audio...I will let you know how it goes.

:)

You need I.E. for Microsoft updates unless you have the FireFox plugin that handles that.

A lot of people don't use I.E. anymore (altho I'm not one of them, yet).

I am attempting to copy, my toshiba SD-R5372 is making some noise, my computer seems active, but the Roxio Creator Classic Burn Progress is not showing any signs of progress. It has been over 9 mins, and I did put the write speed on 8X.

OK - so we know now the drive is working - bear with me on this

First - uninstall the program using add/remove programs in the control panel and reboot

Download and run Roxizap

http://www.download3k.com/Roxio-Zap/Downlo...oxizap.exe.html

Also this (Microsoft Cleanup Tool)

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/290301

Re-install the program and let me know how you get on

Just confirming. Uninstall the Roxio then Roxio-Zap, Microsoft.com clean up tool and then re-install Roxio. from in the Pacific Digital DVD burner bundle 3.5 Program disc which Easy cd/dvd Creator 7.1 Basic is included. Will that mess with the update drive of today?

No - what it will do is clean EMC 7 off your hard drive completely so you can do a fresh install.

It won't affect the drive firmware

The reason for both roxizap and the MS clean up is 'belt and braces' really (for braces read suspenders - over here that means something totally different :) )
