Creator Classic won't burn DVD-Rs.

HM055

Question

I am using Roxio Easy Media Creator v7.5.249 with the latest updates I can find. I am trying to burn DVD-Rs on a Sony DVD RW DRU-720A, and am getting a lot of errors. I am mostly doing "Data" projects. Most of the errors are as follows:

E: Sony DVD RW DRU-720A ("Session Fixation Error while writing lead out - Medium error." [03/72/02])

E: Sony DVD RW DRU-720A ("Program memory area update failure - Medium error." [03/73/04])

etc.

All of the errors show "Medium Error" in them.

Creator Classic is also showing the disks as ISO types before I burn, not UDF types even though I have everthing set to burn with UDF v102.

Creator Classic also shows the blank disks as 700-M CDRs, not 4.7-G DVDs, on the front page before I burn.

According to the Sony "DriveCheck Diagnostic Tool", the drive checks out okay.

The drive wrote disks fine before I did the Sony "JY08" Firmware Update. I wrote the firmware update correctly, according to all instructions! I'm not sure if that is when it started having problems or not, but I believe disks burned fine after updating too.

The drive will still burn CD disks fine.

I am using Memorex DVD-R's. Have had no problem using them with this drive until recently.

One more thing - when I right-click the drive Properties settings in Windows Explorer and check the Recording Tab, the "Enable CD Recording" is often "unchecked". I have to click it and click apply before burning disks.

My system is as follows:

EMachines T4852 Desktop

Intel 2.8-Gig Pentium 4-HT (Hyperthreading)

1-Gig Ram

64-Megs Intel Extreme Graphics onboard

Windows XP-Home, with all newest updates

Screensaver OFF when I burn.

Virus and Internet Security OFF when I burn.

Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated.

TIA

If you were getting ECDC 5 to run with WinXP SP2, you are doing more than many have been able to, and officially there were so many changes caused by SP2 that ECDC 5 is NOT supported.

If you have ALL updates, that presumably includes IE 7, which breaks EMC 7 & 8, so I'm sure it'd break ECDC 5.

There have been more problems reported on the boards involving Memorex discs than all other brands put together.

That gives you a few places to look.

Sony has a firmware update for that drive that fixes "Writing performance and reliability improvements". here

They also have a list of recommended 'brands' of DVDs that the drive works best with here

Sony also has diagnostic software on to help diagnose and fix problems with the drive here

If you suspect the firmwrare, maybe you should flash back to the older firmware if it worked ok. Have you tried different brands of media?

Not sure how I would flash back to the old DVD-Rom. Can't find any files to do so on the Sony site. And I doubt just unloading drivers would do it.

I haven't tried different media yet. Will do so asap.

Thanks.

No, I'm using Easy Media Creator v7.5.249. And I did neglect to mention that I have NOT installed IE-7. I try not to use new software until it's "well" debugged. I have only installed all the important security and other updates from MS.

I'll try something other than Memorex soon as I can get some. Not sure why they would suddenly go south though, since they've worked fine the last couple of years, until now. And I'm still using the same batch.

Thanks

Ya, already installed the firmware update. Doesn't work. And I'll try other brands of disks soon. Tried the diagnostic software. It claims the drive is good. I'll send the log to Sony and see what they have to say about it.

Thanks

I have had cheap media go bad while just sitting around waiting to be used… Even replaced a Burner once, because I didn't think the media could be at fault!

Verbatim is one that has always worked for me.

Ya, could be the problem. I've used Verbatims before. Seemed to work well. I'll give them a try.

Thanks
