I understand the problem. 'Ideally' when you edit MPEG 2 files (trimming, ,joining, adding text, etc), only those portions that youedit should be re-rendered. Afterall , you did change those areas. Unfortunately, that has not been my experience over the pasat 5 or 6 years. Good news is that things ARE getting better. There are several several shareware apps that will trim and join MPEG 2 files without re-rendering or altering the original quality. But they don't do any editing. As I posted in another thread, I have had limited success with Videowave/MyDVD 9 with editing and it not re-rendering. Fluke? I don't know. I haven't figured out exactly how much editing triggers it to completely re-render.

As for the camcorder you have, I don't know if MyDVD support AVCHD MPEG4 files or not. One way to find out - try it. From what I have read on the net even if you don' t have a HDTV, you can still get superior SD by recording in HD and then let MyDVD convert to SD for the disc. Several people in other forums swear the quality is much better than recording in SD to start.

If you have a DVD player that supports HD MPEG4, DivX HD or HD WMV, you can just edit the HD video and output to HD file. Create the appropriate data disc for viewing on a HDTV.

Videowave/MyDVD will import MPEG4, but I don't know about the AVCHD format. I can tell you though that editing ANY compressed format isn't recommended. Editing software just hasn't kept up the hardware.

How well is capturing from that model supported? USB or firewire? How will you play the video back? Are there any DVD Players that support MPEG 4 playback? How would you burn it to disc? These are questions that you need to answer for youself.

When I say edit, I am talking about trimming the ends, and maybe putting scrolling text at the beginning of the clip, and joining several clips together. The Sony HD camcorder comes with software that is supposed to to this, but neither Best Buys knowledgable staff or Sony Telephone sales support could answer my questions. In addition, once you get the HD video into the PC what are you going to do with it unless you have an HD/BlueRay burner? This Sony HD camcorder recores in either standard 480 4X3 or 16X9 with clips iin MPG format, or in the HD MPEG4 AVCHD format. I will probably wait 6 months and see what happens. What prompted all this is my 10 yr old 8MM analog camcorders battery will not hold a charge, and they want too much for a new one to use on such an old camcorder. I have been using EMC9 and my digital snap shot camcorder to do 16X9 vidoes that look great on my 62" HD TV.
