Reformating Roxio backup DVD

Recommended Posts

Useing EZ 6, with WinXP Pro, a Plextor PX-708A burner I started a backup of some files. A power outage interrupted the process & I'd like to reformat the DVD's that had been burned. They are DVD+R RW DVD's

TIA

If they are DVD/R, they cannot be reformatted.

If they are DVD/RW, you do not have a backup anyway - the recrystalized aluminum alloy will decrystalize over time, taking all the data with it. Usualy months, altho they can go in days, weeks or years - and do not send you an engraved warning when they go.

They are DVD+R RW DVD so normally could reformat them but when EZ 6 formated them for the backup it appears they locked the DVD so no further formatting can take place....

I'm sorry, but there is no such thing as "DVD+R RW DVD".

There's DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD RAM.

So I'm not sure exactly kind of media you are referring to.

Optical media works by creating pits and lands, unlike magnetic or Flash media. If you want a "great-big floppy-disc", I'd suggest you want either an External Hard Drive or a Flash drive (aka Jump / Pen / Keychain / Thumb drive).

Selecting Disk resu;lts in a drop down menu with only Eject & Disk Info not greyed out. No other selections are available.

Tks

Also are we absolutely sure this is actually a DVD RW disc?

Some brands of DVD R will also have the RW logo on them but that does not make them an RW disc!!!

Of course R media cannot be erased so the option will be grayed out.

Thanks for the response. I'm not sure, just going by the labeling on the disk & spindle wrap.. Label has 8X DVD+r then the RW logo on the bottom of The DVD. Same ID on the wrapping.

I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but the DVD+RW Alliance uses this logo to show that the DVD is a PLUS (+) disc, like this

. . .but it's not re-writeable.

You're another victim of the war between the DVD Forum (- or "dash" format) and the DVD+RW Alliance (+ pr plus format).

Not only are there two different and competing standards, but they use totally confusing names and labels too. Your DVDs are 8x DVD+Rs, so can't be erased or rewritten. (The confusion isn't your fault)

CD's advice about getting a DVD identifier program is well worth following.

Thanks all, my dad used to tell me you learn something new every day...

Edit: I d/l the DVD Idenifier & it reads a blank dvd as DVD+R/RW, mfg Ricoh Co, and the same for a backed up DVD...so I guess the orginal question remains...

Hello again,

Sorry that logo was so big. I wasn't making a BIG point, I just didn't have time to resize it. :)

The part you've quoted from DVD Identifier seems to be telling you the disc is a DVD+R or DVD+RW. You need to know which it is. The thing to look at is Media Type.

If Identifier is confusing, I'd suggest you get the free program on cdanteek's third link, CDSpeed from CDSpeed2000.com. It's an extremely useful program for identifying discs and also for scanning them if you want to see how the burn quality is. I use it every day.

Run the program and click on the Disc Info tab, and you'll see all the info you need. Look under 'Basic Information' for 'Disc Type'.

If the disc IS a DVD+R then there's no erasing it, ever. But if it's an RW then the ERASE function in Creator Classic should erase the disc even when Drag2Disc doesn't want to reformat it.

Please let us know how you get on.

Actually, you don't have to download anything as V6 includes all you need…

Insert the disc, open Classic – Disc – Disc Information. It will tell you if it is R or RW.

Creator will give one basic disc info, like R or RW.

Roxio has included DVDInfo Pro now in three versions that succeed version 6 (7.5, 8, 9) for good reason, it's a excellent tool to have and use!
