Ripping/ "Converting" files

Hey, and thanks in advance for any help. Just found out that this software has been "Officially Retired" as of July - great...!!! , which means no Tech Support. Aren't we just the lucky crowd... Anyway, problem is that to "Rip" a file off of a Cd, we should be able to go to "Convert", and after clicking, get a drop-down box that (according to the instructions) should give us multiple file formats to save into - like *.mP3, *.WAV, *.WMA, as shown in the instructions. BUT - in this case, the only "Save" choice that shows up in the drop-down menu is *.WAV here. Again, the product is fully updated, and since I'm more familiar with the "Classic" version, this is what I've been using. I've had NO problems with recording/burning, and other components seem to work fine also. Is there something deep into Preferences elsewhere that might need to be turned on? Is it possible that with the "Rights/Licensing" crap that this isn't allowed anymore? Would appreciate any help/suggestions that you might have. Thanks for the read, and look forward to your input. W.B.

  • name which program which gives you the problem - Music CD Project, Data CD Project, Direct CD, Disc Copy, etc.
  • give your operating system (Win98SE, WinXP SP1, Linux, etc.)
clarify which Roxio version number - the version number can be found by going to the program in question, clicking on "help" at the top, and then "about".
  • Did you purchase a full retail version or did this come free with your computer/burner.

Thanks, Guru - let's see here...

name which program which gives you the problem - Music CD Project, Data CD Project, Direct CD, Disc Copy, etc.

>> I was trying this with a Music Cd project (tried regular and MP3), then tried Data Cd, and also Enhanced. Ended up with just the same single (.WAV) choice only.

give your operating system (Win98SE, WinXP SP1, Linux, etc.)

>> Win XP, fully upgraded (Sp2, etc) through Windows Update site (except for no Explorer 7 [hate it], and no Media Player 11 [didn't take the time to research consensus on installation yet]) . AMD XP 2400+ processor, 704Mb ram (64 mb's siphoned off into the onboard video).

clarify which Roxio version number - the version number can be found by going to the program in question, clicking on "help" at the top, and then "about".

>> Easy CD & DVD Creator 6, all components (I believe) upgraded through Roxio Website. Version of "Creator Classic" in use (and having this issue) is 6.2.0.111 . If you'd like to offer a few hints on the "newer" version of "Creator" in the program, that's fine. I'm just used to "Classic" (Old School, I guess :D , so haven't taken the time to study the included Tutorial. Any thoughts/suggestions graciously received.

Did you purchase a full retail version or did this come free with your computer/burner.

>> Yep - full retail version of Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 Platinum, after I found out (from Roxio support, at that time) that the full version of "5" that we had bought wasn't backwards compatible to the many saved projects of version 4 that we had used previously. :)

Thanks for the interest, Guru - will look forward to trying to work with you and figure this one out. Thanks again, and go get some coffee (or is it Red Bull for you...??? ). W.B.

Just want to double check something...

You have the CD inserted, and a list of the tracks on the cd appears in the source window.

You then select the track(s) you want to convert.

THEN you click on convert.

Is this correct.

>> Yes - exactly what I was trying, although not at first (but prior to the post). I noticed (obviously, I suppose) that without anything "selected/highlighted" in the source window that the "Convert" item/option was not even active/valid. When it is, then the only option available in the "Save" drop down box is .Wav - no .mP3, and no .WMA, unfortunately. Hard to understand, but glad for the help. Thanks. W.B.

>> Sorry, John - the problem is STILL the same - *.WAV file ONLY... Unfortunately, as I mentioned, it will NOT "Convert/allow a Save" to either .mP3 or .WMA. AND - as we know, it's the .mP3 (at least right now) that I'm really interested in. SO - I hope that we can figure this out, and thanks again for the help. W.B.

Thanks John and James for the interest and suggestions. I tried the "older" CD possibility, and it didn't help - or DID it...??? I finally "gave up" temporarily, re-saved my work, and shut the machine down with no CD in the drive. When I booted up later, I tried the "new" version of Disc Copy/ Cd Maker, and it immediately started to "Convert/Rip" the file into an .mP3 . So, I cancelled the whole process, closed the #$^@ program down, and let things sit. When I opened the "Classic", I set the project up exactly the same way as previously, and low and behold (just like James suggested) the "Conversion" worked perfectly, and the rest of things seemed to do so, too. I'm glad, and sorry for the trouble at this point, but it's a damned mystery, to say the least... Thanks again for the assistance, and if we don't talk, a Happy Holiday to all. Your input is much appreciated. W.B. :)

Thanks, James - I did finally get it working, and was able to compose and generate the special project I wanted. I appreciate your interest, help, and input. Hope you had and have a nice Holiday.

As an update, here's what I learned:

It seems like Creator Classic tends to "hold on to things" a bit, and I actually encountered that same "file conversion" glitch a few times. It seems to either come from possible lower situational resources (although just how on an Xp system with Athlon 2400+Xp processor and 768 Mb of Ram I don't know - even with a clean cache and no temp files), or simply an intermittent conflict between/amongst some software. Sometimes, a reboot is what's necessary, and in each case, the "file conversion/Ripping" function worked just fine. Go figure.

I haven't used the "Creator" function of the Updated Creator Platinum 6 that I have installed (and fully updated, which I heartily recommend doing to everyone) because it seems quite different. Do you have any suggestions/input as to usability factor regarding the Creator Classic, which I still prefer, as of now?

I did encounter one additional item - an "automatic" or "unscheduled" re-boot problem that, according to Microsoft after I sent in the error report, was tied into a Roxio "UdfReader.sys" driver, for which they advise an update, and offer a direct link to the Roxio site. Do you or anyone know anything about this, as I've not been able to find anything about it yet.

Any help and/or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks again, and Happy Holidays to all. W.B. :)

UDFReader is part of Drag to Disc. If you don't have any good use for Drag to Disc, and "good" is very limited, you might want to go into Control Panel – Add/Remove Programs and remove it.

While there check under the Adaptec name for a UDF Reader and remove it if it exists. (people sometimes install it without realizing they are).
