Editing Video in DVD Builder

joto2036

Question

Hi,

I have a video clip that I would like to edit in DVD Builder.

It's in the center part of the video.

I would like to remove a short section of video from this location.

I could not find any instructions for this type of editing in the Help section. I found where they talked about shortening the duration but not about removing a short section.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Duration will remove something from the beginning or the end but a better way is move the scrubber to the beginning of what you want to keep and select Split. You must be in Timeline view.

Then move to the end and Split again.

Now select the isolated portions you want to delete and Delete it.

The neat thing is that your original clip will never be altered. Builder will only retain 'notes' about what you want to do.

The best procedure is to do your editing in VidoeWave and save the Project. Then add the VW Project to Builder to create your interface and burn your DVD.

What version of the program are you using? Are you using Easy Media Creator 7+ that you downloaded or purchased from a store OR a version that came with hardware? Or are you using DVD Builder?

If you're using a full version of EMC7, follow James' advice and start the production in VideoWave, switch to the timeline view and 'split' the video into scenes that you can delete or move around.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

I am using Roxio Easy Media Creator Basic DVD7 which was furnished by TDK with their burner.

I captured the video with DVD Builder and there is a short section that I want to delete but can't figure out how to do it.

James mentioned the "scrubber" and that's a new term to me.

Thanks

The Basic version did not have Timeline included with it. You need to upgrade to a full version of EMC. You could find a full version on E-bay, but if your system specs support it, you are better off upgrading to EMC 9.

If you decide to continue using your Basic version, contact TDK for questions you may have, as it isn't supported by Roxio, and most of the folks here aren't familiar with those crippled versions.

Actually, I think you can drag multiple copies of the video onto the Storyline. The use Adjust Duration on each copy to trim it to the length that you want. It's a slower method than using the Timeline, but it should work.

Please let us know if you can do that.

:) Thanks for your notes.

Let me explain a little how this works in EMC 7 and it should work the same in your SE edition.

When you do a File\ Save Production as...... it will save your production as a .dmsm file. That is a file which tells the program what editing changes you want to make. This is useful if you want to work on a file over a period of time. It links to your original video files, so you'll need to keep the original video files on your computer until you get ready to make the final movie.

It's a good idea to do a File\ Save Production as.... when you first start working on a production and then do a File\ Save occasionally. That way if your computer freezes, you have a power failure or something causes the computer to shut off, you'll be able to retrieve your work. I usually use two copies of the same production (File\Save production as.... with two different file names) and alternate between the two. That way if something happens to corrupt one production, I won't lose all my work.

When you want to burn to a DVD, you hit the DVD icon and that will launch DVD Builder (or File\Burn production to disk...). Once you have the menu the way you want it, hit Burn and burn the DVD. DVD Builder will encode the file to an mpeg2 movie and burn the DVD. ( Note: This can take some time, so you might want to run errands or sit back with a cup of coffee and a book.)

Highlighting the videos should not be necessary. If you just want to make an mpeg2 movie, in VideoWave, the File\ Output production to....Video File\ DVD authoring.... best will give you an mpeg2 movie that you then have to put on a menu in DVD Builder. By just clicking Burn from VideoWave, you eliminate this extra step.

Happy burning.

Hi ml,

Finally got a chance to try your suggestion. Your suggestion did work.

It took some trial & error to combine these two video clips into one afterwards. The Help file was of no help in this regard.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for reporting back on your results.

So that other people can learn from your experience..... how did you end up combining the video clips into one? ( Unfortunately Help files in most programs seem to be written to cover only general principles. )

Hi ml,

I normally try to save notes on what I had to do to solve the problem. Here's my notes:

Use VideoWave SE in Roxio and drag multiple copies of the .avi file to Production Editor in Story line.

Then use “Adjust Duration” to start and end video clips to cut out the section of video that is not wanted. (This might require two or more clips of the same .avi file in the Production Editor Storyline).

Then highlight the two or more video clips in Production Editor Storyline, then click File, Output Production To, then in next window, click on Video File.

Click Next

Fill in Purpose & Quality

Click Next,

Fill in a File Name,Click Next,

Click Render

This will create a .mpg file.

If you highlight two video clips that have adjusted durations, then click File, Save Production and assign a File Name & location…..This saves it as a .dmsm file.
