CD-R disc prices may increase up to 10% next quarter

Like we need another competing standard in discs and players . . . ?

I think the problem isn't so much a 'standard' here but someone in Philips has realised that the patent they had years ago on the laser discs (anyone recall them? BIG 12 inch optical discs that were so far down everyone's wish list that the dealers would GIVE you a player if you agreed to buy a couple of movies) still covers any optical media.

 

That's what I read into that article - Philips is trying to set up a consortium (again) to control production of optical media
