Something running in the background?

dcpaq2

Question

Group,

At about 2 to 230 am each morning I noticed a lot of hard drive activity and high processor usage of about 90 to 100 percent for about 15 to 30 minutes time that is really slowing my computer down tremendously.

Does anyone know what this Roxio Creator 8 is doing that would use so much memory and slow my computer down every morning at 2 am?

Thanks

Doug

I have the same problem. Installed EMC yesterday and the disk cranking almost never stops (when I run EMC).

The excellent systinternals tools (File Monitor and Program Monitor from http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/default.mspx) tell me that it is definitely Roxio accessing the disk, specifically

VCGProxyFileManager9.exe

VideoWave9.exe

and

RoxMediaDB9.exe

The files that it is touching are all media files. Would be nice to be able to turn off that scanning.

Yes I'm running 9 not 8, but problem sounds the same.

Go to start, run and type in msconfig

On that, go to startup and iuncheck RoxWatch9.exe, reboot and tell the nag screen you know you disabled a startup program and kindly stop pestering me.

This will stop MediaWatch from loading up

What makes you so sure it's Roxio? Take a close look at your start up programs and then visit this site for info on the programs that you may or may not know take control of your system.

However, Roxio does put a few programs of it's own in the startup group too but I'm not aware that they would do what you are suggesting.

First I would check for a scheduled task. Start, programs ,accessories, system tools, scheduled tasks folder. Is there a task scheduled everyday at 2:00 or 2:30AM?

I would look at your Virus program as a more likely culprit.Usually when they are installed they set up some kind of schedule to do drive scans to look for viruses. They also usually schedule them at hours they think would not be normal usuage hours,or when your machine is started on certain days.

What makes you think it is Roxio and not some other service you have running?

Because I have THREE other computers and the one that I am complaining about is the ONLY computer that has Roxio version 8 installed on it otherwise ALL the computers are configured exactly the same.

Also I didnt start having this issue until I installed this program.

I see nothing in the option or settings for Roxio 8.

I use AVG and it is not the culprit. It tells me when its scanning and I can tell when it is.

Have you run a scan for malware? Lavasoft SE and/or Spybot S&D will soon determine if there is an app lurking in the background that you might not be aware of.

Don't confuse malware with virii - most AV scanners don't spot malware

Hi,

Did you ever figure out how to solve the problem with VCGProxyfilemanager9.exe taking all the system resources?

Thanks,

... Brad

CTRL-ALT-DEL should show you what process is causing the activity. (If you notice it, you must be awake). As an alternate try "What's Running"
