computer hanging after starting EMC6 - especially Videowave

karnor1

Question

I downloaded the full version of EMC9.0 from Roxio yesterday and installed it. I have had nothing but problems. I've been trying to research each on and try all of the fixes, but have not had any success.

I have been able to successfully use Sound Editor and have burned a DVD of my EMC9.0 program files as a backup using Classic Creator.

The main problem I'm having is with Videowave. When it opens, I can add video to edit, but it takes a while to come up. It then hangs when I try to edit the clip - or do anything else for that matter. The few times I've been able to get a short clip edited, the sound is very choppy. The program won't shut down, other programs (such as Windows Task Manager) won't open. The only option I have had is to shut down the whole computer.

Every time I start Roxio, I'm also still getting the screen saying my video card driver may be outdated (it isn't). I know one post said there isn't a fix for this - just to click through.

What I've done so far:

-made sure all of my drivers/firmware were updated

-updated/installed DirectX9.0

-gone into Advanced Audio Properties to back the accelerator a notch

-uninstalled all extra programs in Roxio that I didn't think I'd need

-checked the version of IE 7 I have (as far as I can tell, it's the most current one)

Any other suggestions? I'm to the point right now where I'm having to edit in another program (trial version that's ending soon) and hope that I can get EMC9.0 to burn the DVD (the other program hasn't been letting me burn DVDs -- no reliable technical support for the program). I'm considering reinstalling VideoWave 5 and Easy CD/DVD Creator 6 because although I still had issues with them, at least I was a little further along than I am now.

VideoWave and MyDVD, in EMC 9 aren't going to run with that GeForce 2 video card. I liked mine, when I had it, but that card is almost 7 years old in technology.

If you have an AGP slot, get a new video card with a minimum of 128MB RAM. If possible, find one with 256MB RAM.

So, what are some suggestions for video cards that might be compatible with both EMC9 and my computer? I thought I read on one of the threads that some/one of the NVIDIA cards wouldn't work with EMC9 even though it was newer and met the qualifications.

I have a high end NVidia card, and the only reason I have it is because of my NVidia based SLI motherboard. I would stay away from NVidia and find a ATI card. There are many of them, but I don't know which one to recommend. I have an ATI 9800 Pro in my backup computer, and it runs everything in EMC 9 just fine. The NVidia card in my signature will run VideoWave and MyDVD fine, but it won't encode while in Hardware render. Go figure.

Others who have NVidia cards have not had problems, so it may be something else in the configuration of my computer. I use DVDit Pro to author and burn the productions I output from VideoWave.

Some of your problems may also be related to your CPU, it barely meets the EMC 9 requirements.

For DVD, slideshow or video authoring: 1.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent; 256 MB RAM <LI>For real-time MPEG-2 capture and burning:1.6 GHz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent; 256 MB RAM

Well, through a series of round about methods, I have finally gotten two dvds to burn and one to copy.

It's still running as slow as molasses (I know a lot of that has to do with my CPU), but I've had a few minot successes. Here are a few things that seem to have helped.

-Regarding the video card and making sure the driver was updated: When I went through Device Manager, it showed that the driver was up to date. However, when I went to NVIDIA, there was another update that was available that covered my video card. In myDVD, the menu titles are showing up instead of being blocks.

-I also went in and found that somehow the setting for DMA had been changed back to PIO (I *know* it was set to DMA before). I reset it to DMA.

The program is still running slowly and has occasionally locked up, but I have gotten much further than I was ever able to get before.

One other thing - it's probably more an issue with my burner, but I changed my dvd burning speed down to almost the lowest speed. It seems to kick out more often if it's set to burn at higher speeds (when it finally gets to the burning process).

You system is below requirements and that is why you are having problems burning to DVD and it only barely works at the lowest speed. Also the Divice Manager does not tell you if your drivers are up-to-date, it only tells you what you have installed.

I used the option in device manager to update the driver by searching on the internet for updates. It updated the driver the first time I did it - but there was an additional program that had been developed for the video card.

You can't do it that way. You have to go to the NVidia website to get your drivers.

Right. That's what I found out. After being told to update through Device Manager elsewhere, I decided to go directly to the source "just in case." Glad I did.

I know I'm on the edge of the specs, so I don't expect great things but I am definitely feeling better about getting some use from the program until such a time as I can afford to upgrade things.

I've improved the process a little bit by installing VideoWave on my other computer that has a faster processor and a little more memory. I can edit and save to my external drive, then use my original computer to burn to DVD.

Thanks to all of you for your help. You've always come through when I needed help with my other Roxio products in the past -- no difference now!
