AVI Video Clips

MaryG

Question

Have been using Roxio EMC 7 for a while now with no problems, but recently got new camera with video clips in AVI file format which I can't use in Roxio (old camera was MOV file video clips). When I view the video clips in Roxio they appear with red circle over them with a red line accross it -like NO ENTRY sign

You are correct, James. It's an 8 MP digital still camera.

According to a review on Cnet, the video is recorded as...." 30fps, VGA-resolution MPEG-4 videos"

Good, now that we know that, I don't think there is anything she can do with them.

I believe V9 is the only version to accept mpg4, AVI's unless there is some conversion software that was included with the camera.

This is from an old Roxio post from their past webboards:

This appears to be a conflict between certain third party software and Easy Media Creator 7

1. Download and apply the latest update for Easy Media Creator 7.

a. Click on Start --> Programs --> Roxio --> Roxio Easy Media Creator Home

b. Once that application launches, click on 'Extras & Utilities'

c. Now click on 'Roxio Updater'

d. Follow the rest of the instructions on screen to be stepped through the update process.

e. Reboot your computer once complete

2. Download and install PrefUpdate.

a. Download and save the following application:

http://tools.roxio.com/support/hotfix/prefup.exe

b. Close all open software including Internet Explorer and any Roxio applications

c. Double click on the 'prefup.exe' file located on your desktop

d. Choose 'yes' to apply the 'PrefTable Update'

e. Read the information presented on screen before applying the update

f. Once you have read the items listed there, choose 'I agree' to continue

g. Once installed, click the 'close' button

h. Reboot your computer

i. This issue should now be fixed and all DV files should be usable

hi, roxio doesn't recognise anything except for mpeg and mpg video formats. i have the same problem and this is roxio's downfall. if it is a vob or avi file, i use nero express as nero accepts these, but doesn't accept mpg or mpeg. doesn't make sence but there you go. :)

How are you importing those DV AVI files from your camcorder?

Do your camcorder and computer have an IEEE 1394 (firewire) connection? If they do, you can use EMC 7 Capture to import that video.

Can any of those .avi clips be played in Windows Media Player?

Here is one other thing to try.

Rename your Media Manager folder.

Media Manager is a hidden file. Go to My Computer/Tools/Folder Options, click on View, scroll down to Hidden Files and folders, and click in the circle to the left of Show hidden files and folders. Click on Apply, then Ok.

a. Close all open applications, especially Roxio applications.

b. Open My Computer.

c. Double click on the C: drive and browse to C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Roxio, where USERNAME is the name of the user you are currently logged in as.

d. Right click on the MediaManager folder and choose rename.

e. Name the folder MediaManager.old

Look now, to see if those .avi files show up.

I think we are talking about a Still camera? I find it a little hard to believe that they would elect an AVI format for that due to the sheer size of the files!

Mary: Tell us the make and model of the camera so we can take a look at it.

Possible Solution: This worked for me

I started comparing avi files that would not run in the editor to avi's from my little Canon A75 that would run in the player

Some of the unreadable avi's were compressed with Xvid and others were compressed with DixX.

I started looking for avi decompressor filters online.

I pretty was much flying by the seat of my pants on this but I somehow got the avi's to now work!

I downloaded first: AVI Codec Pack +

Available here: http://www.avicodecpack.com/

Then, before I checked to see if that had worked I also downloaded this: XviD codec

Available here: http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/

Note: I have a feeling it was actually the AVI Codec Pack + that really did the trick. Unfortunately, I only checked to see if the avi's were recognized in the editor after getting both of these on the system.

Worth a shot to those having problems I suppose. All I know is where there's a will there's a way on the Internet.

Good Luck to all...

Cross posting this in the other avi thread as well.
