Computer crashes when installing Creator 7

Jennifer57

Question

I have a dell dimension Pentium 4, running windows xp, plenty of harddrive space and 1 gig of memory.

I am going to go bald, I swear!

Roxio 5 came with the computer.

Upgraded to 7 (new purchase with cd key)

Computer crashed

Reload Roxio 7, then up grade to Roxio 8

Lost DVD drives and cd drives

Dell fixes

Reload Roxio 8, can't get it to copy to cd or dvd,

So I remove it and try loading Roxio 7 again.

Lost CD Key!

Buy a new Roxio 7 with cd key

I load it on my computer and it crashes. Comes up with a blue screen saying

File-cdr4-xp.sys

Driver unloaded without cancelling pending operations. (I did make sure, or at least I thought I had made sure that nothing else was running when I loaded it)

When I reboot and start at last safe start up, Roxio will come up, but it will not let me copy or burn files to a disk any more.

Any help would be appriciated.

Thanks

I'm so sorry, ...................... How do I do that?

I right clicked on the globe, then went to properties, and then went to securty, it gives me medium, medium low and low but no off button to be found.

Post 11 in this thead has the list of things that have been found to interere with update downloads.

If you do not have any firewall, you are doing some very risky surfing. I think AntiVirus may be as important, but whereas I get occasional notices from my FireWall that it has blocked a Trojan, I've not had many close encounters with Viruses (this probably is releted to the fact I don't have any email program installed - it's all out there on the internet - and my surfing these days is limited mostly to what I've found rather than running around looking).

WinXP has a FireWall (which has been known to block Roxio downloads), altho it's a pretty wimpy FireWall according to reviews I've seen.

I have a firewall in my Mcafee, does that count?

I will go to post 11 and re-read.

Thanks

A firewall will block downloads. Turn it off and see if you can get the download.

Okay, I did the Roxio 5 clean up. I uninstalled Roxio 7, (although it still shows that I have Roxio 7 when I type in redgit (I didn't touch nothing though) I did a PC doc scan and cleaned all that up.

I then reloaded Roxio 7, same blue screen with the cdr4-xp.sys error. I rebooted to last good config, Roxio 7 is there, but when I click on it, and try to write files to a cd, it has "no common write speed" and the burn light is gray. When it worked, I burned at 16x

So something is still so very wrong!

and the Roxio web is still down.

All the stuff I have read, I guess I am suppose to redo some htymlziyme keys???????? I know, don't touch!

Novice alert!

I know you guys gave up on me, but I bulldogged until I could find someone to help me.

Since I have a Dell, their chat line, and complety taking over my computer finally got it fixed.

Everything works, it took 3 different tech support guys and gals from Dell to do it, but finally! I hope it never crashes again.

I just kept signing in until the right one showed up that gave me the fix that I wanted, and that was both my cd and dvd drives, and my flash drive and my Roxio working all in perfect harmony!!!

It's kinda weird watching your computer do things without you touching the mouse!

Hope this can help someone else.

Thank you all so much for trying.

You better be guru enough to understand what I DON'T know. Cuz I put novice alert on everything!

The first thing I did was to go to add and remove Roxio, did that. Rebooted. Thought, to heck with, I won't mess with it anymore, after the dreaded blue screen (scream) cdr4xp.sys error. Then I went to search and typed in Roxio, deleted everything that has roxio after it. Not all would delete, but I didn't care, I just wanted my computer back. Well after I rebooted, my cd and dvd was gone. NOT AGAIN! I banged my head on the desk, took a deep breath and went to the Dell Chat for help for dummies or some such thing. Took ALL day! to get the right one!

They didn't turn off any pop up blockers

They didn't shut down my mafee

They found my cd and dvd drives and put them back on.

They then had me load Roxio and reboot.

My cd rom and dvd drives disappeared again!

Then the one person did his magic.

He deleted my cd and dvd drives, then he did a few things that the techs didn't.

He deleted another part of the device manager called IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, then he hit look for new hardware, found them.

Then he went back and in the IDE thingy, he put in Automatic.

Sometime during all of this, (I think it was afterwords) but I had to reboot the computer 3 times during this session with just the one tech.

He went to

redgit????? He either deleted or moved, (it was so fast that I don't recall) and took off lower filter keys and made a new folder, but somewhere in there he typed PxHelp20.

PLEASE don't try to make sense of what I just said, or try to do it if you are a dummy like me! I didn't touch nothing! I never touch them!

But maybe, just maybe, if you guys are goofing around and can make a computer have all this crap happen you can get it back to work. Makes life so much easier, when you can just come in and fix it with me just sitting and watching. I would have gladly paid twice (didn't cost me nothing but time) the amount to have it fixed. Still cheaper than a new computer! And I didn't have to haul it around.

Jennifer

I forgot, he also when to a place where all the "gears" are! And did something in there. I know I'm not much help.

Did you install Internet Explorer 7 by any chance?

btw - your CD key (if you registered the program) is in your personal info

http://www.roxio.com/REGISTRATION/login.as...%2fDefault.aspx

No, I haven't downloaded the new explorer 7,

I forgot to register the orginal Roxio 7, (I did the 8 and the 5, and now the new 7)

I shut down the fire wall, disconnected from the internet.

Reloaded Roxio 7,

same blue screen came up.

got the patch, didn't seem to make a difference though. Had to start at last good configuration.

I get an error now to reload drag to disk, When I loaded Roxio, I made sure that I did a complete install with drag to disk, so......

Everything seems to work except it won't burn to disk. The space that says my CD and DVD drive is empty and won't come up with anything. So can't burn. It all functions fine up to that point.

I checked to make sure that my CD and DVD drives are there, they are. I also made sure that my flash drive worked (as it disappeared also, Dell fixed all of them) So Roxio is not seeing my CD or my DVD drives.

Hey, Great explanation of what the tech did Jennifer. I think most all of the more knowledgeable users on the forum can kind of read between the lines and know what the tech did. The hard part about getting help on this Roxio forum regarding EMC programs is that we just can't get the OP's to tell us in enough detail what their problem is and give us enough information about the other software and hardware and make up of their computer.

Given that information there is a great chance that their problems can be solved. Thanks for coming back and telling us what you had done. :)

The point in shutting down the firewall was to start the update download. When you are offline, you can't download anything. You can turn the firewall back on as soon as the download is running.

Lynn

I guess I didn't word that right,

I turned off mcafee, disconnected from the internet

Loaded Roxio 7

Then rebooted. Same blue screen showed up.

started with last good configuration.

Then plugged back into the internet, downloaded the patch.

Rebooted

got the drag to disk error

started my mcafee back up.

If you can understand what I just posted, you are my HERO!

I have had a "will call" put into Roxio for 3 weeks. When or if they get back with me, I think I will just say BITE ME!

Okay....I won't, but I wanna!

Good luck you guys. I hope I never have to come back, but If I do, I'll know you guys will be all professionals by just what I posted and can fix me right up. (giggles)

Be patient with the newbys, some of us don't know what regit is or OPs or OEMs, firewalls, the only firewall I know about is the one my dad built, kinda like talking to my son who is in the Marines. all these saps, sars, and asaps and whooohaws. Like a whole new language and I am an outsider trying to understand someone talking French! And the sad part is, at least in person you can point! We just put in the disk and pray that XP or 2000 or or or is smarter than we are!

Do you guys remember the first time some tech told you to DRAG and DROP? Well I do, oh my gosh! YOu want me to what????

And the first time you were asked to FAX something? Well I do! I will never forget what I have learned and will never forget that someone else might not know.

Take care and see ya down the road.

By this time, the registry is probably pretty confused.

Try roxizap to clean it out -

http://tools.roxio.com/support/tools/roxizap.exe

Then, if it chokes over cdr4_xp.sys, the link to

http://www.roxio.com/enu/support/mserr/cdr4_7.html

"Update Your Software An update is available" will work IF you don't have pop-up blockers on.

Pop-up blockers will also block Roxizap, while we are at it.

Works fine on IE6, but no good on Firefox.

Tony

Never tried FireFox altho it came preinstalled on the Win2K. However, since some people have gotten downloads via FireFox and not IE, that shdn't be the problem. (I hope IE 7 isn't involved, it is a problem itself.)

The full list of "if there are download problems" (in the FREQUENT ANSWERS posts on V.5 and V.6 - one of these days we shd do this on V.7):

Temporaily turn off pop-up blockers (it is a pop-up), advertising filters (it has the word "promotion" in it), firewalls (including the Microsoft one, if you have it and it has been activated by a Microsoft update without your knowledge or consent). If that doesn't work, temporarily turn off the Virus-scanner. If that doesn't work, some people have been successful by trying a different browser, such as Firefox or Opera. Both can be downloaded free; Firefox is around 4.5MB, and Opera is a little over 3MB. (Digital Guru d_deweywright reports that when using Opera, it is necessary to enable the Referrer Logging, and actually restart the browser.)
