MyDVD Project's audio out of sync with video

GuitarPeople

Question

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. I'm a newbie to EMC9, and cannot successfully create a DVD Project due to out of sync audio during Burn only. While creating a new DVD project, my previously-captured (in Nero) camcorder files play back perfectly in sync in Preview mode, and on the hard drive; only when I try to burn the project and/or create an image file, the audio becomes out of sync with the video (by about 10 seconds behind the video) after a few minutes. I have removed the IBM DLA program from my system (IBM T43 laptop, windows XP Pro). My .avi files are stored on a just-purchased Western Digital 500 GB external hard drive, with almost nothing else on it. While I initially thought that since I captured the camcorder video with Nero, perhaps there was a compatability issue, but the resulting .avi files play back and preview perfectly in EMC9. Some other posts here mention defragging, and even removing Internet Explorer 7, but those fixes were addressed due to video capture syn problems; y issue seems a bit different. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Roy

Daithi covered the usual suspects for these issues.

All video software has issues with this but actually I would suspect the external drive as the problem. Or at least a likely suspect. There may be a data bottleneck getting to and from that device that causes trouble.

But no one has ever come up with 'magic' software that makes it go away.

I'll try defragging the new hard drive. I always run Adaware for spyware, and Norton anti-virus, constantly checking for updates. I had already shut down the background running programs after reading these posts, so I'm not sure there's an issue there. Again, the Western Digital hard drive is brand new, with only a few files on it, so would the heads still be "skipping all around" looking for data?

Thanks for responding. I'll try a defrag, and cry out for more help if unsiccessful.

Is there anyone at Roxio who I can contact? Do they provide real meaningful support?

Defragging the drive always helps - what happens is that with a fragmented drive the heads are skipping all round the place picking up sequential data and that alone can cause hiccups.

IE7 - jury's still out on that (there have been some reports coming in of it causing problems with EMC9)

One other thing is to run a spyware sweep - Adaware SE and/or Spybot S&D can help

Also - shut down any running programs during the render (messenger, RoxWatch, etc)

I defragged my hard drives (internal and external). Then I tried to burn my project again....same results, with the movie going out of sync after a few minutes....and remaining that way for the whole 45 minutes. What's so maddenly frustrating is, the "project" as assembled on my computer, pre-burning, plays fine throughout....even after I burn onto dvd (Plextor PX-716UF), the project sitting on my computer plays in sync beautifully....Anything left to try now? Should I copy the source .avi file to my C drive and try assembling a dvd project from that? Am I doomed to not be able to use this software for some unkown reason?

Thanks again for your advise.

If defraging didn't fix this error, I have had problems like this when my source files (audio/video) were on two different hard drives. Since, as I understand it, your unrendered project plays fine as a project, have you tried exporting your project as an avi file onto your internal drive first (make a movie file first)? This would require recreating the chapter stops when you make a DVD, However, it seems to avoid the lipsync problems.

If this doesn't work, recheck your project timeline and make sure there is nothing that can throw it off (like a video effect that isn't affecting the audio).

Hope this helps

Please explain what I have bolded.

Have you tried to burn to an image (iso) file rather than burning the project directly to disc? When you click the burn button, select the burn to iso and deselect the other two options. Name the file and select where you want it to be created. Once the iso file is created, you can copy it to to a DVD blank using Disc Copier. Copy it to disc at less then the full speed of your burner.

Creating the iso file (or the folder) separates the encoding from the actual burning so that the computer is not trying to do two things at once. Extra time is minimal, you can preview the iso file in Disc Copier before actually burning it to the DVD blank, and you can make as many copies as you wish with that iso file.

I have the exact same problem. However in doing a little experimenting I was never able to get a good project off the machine but maybe you can try the following because it made a difference in my project. Still not a good project but the difference was noticeable.

Under the options menu in the burn screen there are a few choices. When I select "progressive" instead of "interlaced" my audio is WAY OUT but the video is good. When I select "Interlaced", the audio is in sync but the video is what I am calling "Pixel'ly". It looks like satellite TV in a rain storm.

We are not the only ones with this problem (audio out of sync) and I have installed EMC 9 on two of my computers around the house. Both machines produce the exact same results so I rule out hardware.

On my main "Multi-Media" machine, I have it set up as a dual boot. One is clean with only the OS (win XP) and EMC 9. No other software is installed. No anti-virus, no unnecessary drivers, no firewall, Nothing! I did this as part of my trouble shooting process.

The finished project(s) are identical. Video and Audio are WAY OUT OF SYNC when encoding as progressive and the video is "Pixely" when encoding as interlaced.

Because we are not the only users with this problem, hopefully Roxio will come out with a patch or update to correct the problem.
