Text Only buttons and Play All

Catsnkites

Question

I'm making a menu in MyDVD 9.

I edited a move in VideoWave 9 and then transferred it to MyDVD 9. I selected a menu theme (Snowflakes). I'd like to have a "chapters" Button on the first menu along with a "Play All" button ... I know I saw a step by step to do that, but I can't for the life of me find it! I do have a "Chapters" button .... it's text with no picture, which I like.

On the Chapters menu, I just want buttons that are text, not thumbnails....how do I do that?

My production has five chapters.

After I get the buttons worked out, I'll send it to an iso file and then use Disc Copier to send it to the DVD burner (right Gary R?)

Thank you!

Susie

First let's get our definitions correct. ANY video on the MAIN MENU is considered a 'title' not a chapter. Chapter marks are created by RIGHT mouse clicking on one of the 'titles' and choosing 'edit chapters'. You can then choose to have a sub-menu created or not by the check mark at the botom of that dialog box.

With that in mind, it sounds like you have several TITLES on the main page which you would like to have a Play ALL button. Add your titles and then create an unlinked button. Rename it Play All. Select it and VIEW>SETTINGS. Under LINK in the first drop down list, choose All Movies on Menu.

To change the buttons, click on CHANGE BUTTON STYLE to the left of e the preview. Select any button style that is text only. You have a choice to change ALL button in the project to match.

Hi, Susie,

Here is a link to a post (scroll down to post #10) in EMC 8 that details what I think you want to do. Maybe it is the post you cannot find. Make sure you read Gary's explanation of titles vs. chapters as the linked post uses those terms.

Note: I know the above post is for version 8, but I believe the same basic steps will work in V9.

:D:D Yeah! I did it! Sort of...... :)

I made my very first DVD ... and, wonder of wonders, it works! Sort of.......

OK, my biggest fear was a/v sync issues.....I had tons with my Pinnacle Studio Video stuff ...and this didn't have ANY! :D

Menus...this is where I didn't do so good. On my first screen, or menu....I have two buttons...one says "Chapters" and one says "Play All" They are both just text (no thumbnails) just like I wanted. The big issue is that it's impossible to tell which one you are on. I know they turn color when selected, but there's no way to know which is the "selected color" ...I mean, I know, but others wouldn't. On movie DVDs, there is usually a little cursor that points to the selected item ... anyway to do that in My DVD? Or maybe have the selected text flash????

The next issue was that the chapter menu (the second screen) didn't work so well ... I could arrow through the chapter buttons (which were just text, like I wanted), but as soon as I stopped, it played whatever it landed on ... is this normal? I also had trouble figuring out if it needed up and down or left and right.

My movie was just over 30 minutes long and included a photo slide show set to music. It took a good three hours to render ... normal????

I did chapters mainly so I could skip a section if I wanted to. Can you define chapters (so the >> and << buttons on the remote ...skip, not just fast forward), but not make a menu for them and still have the skip buttons work?

One last question that isn't a button issue (oh no, hijacking my own thread :D ). I have purchased tracks from Napster and I noticed that I couldn't use them for the slide show. I also have tracks on my computer that are from CDs that I physically own ... those I could use. I have used Napster tracks in other video productions (with Pinnacle) ... why can't I in Roxio? I know I can burn them to CD using Roxio ... what if I grabbed them from a CD I burned, would that work?

THANK YOU! Esp Gary R and Grandpa Bruce !!!!

Napster files have DRM so the only solution is to burn to audio CD and then rip them again to be used in Videowave. Surprised that the other editor would use those files.

Buttons on remotes work differently on different brands. My DVD player actually has a SKIP button >>| . There is no special programming. Thta button is suppose to skip from chapter mark to chapter mark. On some DVD players, one button does both. Hit once to skip. Hold it down for fastforward.

Up, down, left , right should be a physical location AND how you added the titles or chapters. For example:

1 2 3

4 5 6

You use UP/DOWN to get from 1 to 4, etc. Left/right to go 1,2,3. At least, that is how is has always work for me.

Highlight colors can be changed easily. With your project open, DO NOT SELECT ANYTHING. View > Settings. Click the second TAB. Click on anyof the little squares to change the Highlight colors. Be careful to choose colors that will show up well on your background colors!! You then need to select a button and then choose the color scheme you changed.

Actually, I think you're right ... I think I did burn a CD and then rip back from that ...

1 2 3

4 5 6

You use UP/DOWN to get from 1 to 4, etc. Left/right to go 1,2,3. At least, that is how is has always work for me.

I had my buttons (which were just text) in a line:

1

2

3

4

5

And that's the order that the tree on the left was ... I'll have to test the up/down again to more accurately describe the problem.

Highlight colors can be changed easily. With your project open, DO NOT SELECT ANYTHING. View > Settings. Click the second TAB. Click on any of the little squares to change the Highlight colors. Be careful to choose colors that will show up well on your background colors!! You then need to select a button and then choose the color scheme you changed.

But if there are just two buttons, how does someone else tell which is selected?

Thank you!!

Ah yes, the vertical problem. Has been reported. I don't think that all of the styles do that. Try different ones. Like when you get to 5 and press DOWN again, instead of 'wrap around' back to '1' it may skip to '2'.

The 'highlight' can be changed from a thin line around the text to a solid color. Select the button. View > Settings. Under 'highlight', choose EXTENT in the drop down list. That covers the entire text when highlighted.
