Problem burning to DVD...HELP!

jill

Question

I am having trouble burning picture files to DVD. I am using EMC9 and within that the Media Manager to burn to DVD (I have also burned as data file). I can burn a picture file one time to a DVD, but if I try to burn the SAME file to a blank new DVD I get an error message that says "Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)". I then took the same file and transferred to another one of my hard drives. Once again I am able to burn the picture file only once. If I try again with another blank DVD I get the same error message. So I tried once more and transferred same file to my external hard drive. Same thing. I can burn the picture file once. When I try and burn the file again to blank dvd I get the Data Error cyclic redundancy check error again. I checked with Sony and my driver is up to date (there is no Firmware for my driver)so I do not think that is the problem. I am able to watch dvd's in the driver and have also created a small video slideshow on dvd before this problem. It is very frustrating. My computer is a Sony Vaio and is only 2 years old. Does anyone know why I can't burn a picture file more than one time to a DVD? I am not having this problem when burning to CD's, only DVD's. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

CRC errors are usually down to corruption in the source file - try defragmenting the drive before you add the source. Also check that you don't have anything lurking in the computer that shouldn't be there (use Adaware and/or Spybot S&D to check and clean)

Also, turn off any running modules - IMs and so on.

Another thing worth trying would be to make an image file (select hard drive as destination) when doing the initial 'burn' and then open that with Disc Copier

jill,

under the version 9 trial I'm using I see no media manager in applications.

Under help in Roxio Help Center Home searching for Media Manager. I see a screen that lists a Media Manager with this above it!

"Note: The Applications link is not available on all versions of this product." and a pic below. Is this the screen you see?

It seems you have a different or OEM version of Roxio EMC9. with only four applications. Media Manager, My DVD, Photo Suite, and Videowave. Open one of these applications and click, help, help about and post the version #'s.

I see a screen similar to that, but not quite that. I also see creator classic, digital media experience, disc copier, label creator, Music Disc creator, and sound editor, in addition to the applications you mentioned above. I don't think I have an unusual version of EMC9. I recently bought it from COMPUSA from a big display. Seemed to me it was the latest version. Where can I find the version #? The only version # I saw was for Windows version #5.1. Is that what you were looking for?

I defragmented both my hard drives and that didn't help.

Regarding corruption in the source file...why would I be able to burn to CD's and not be able to burn same file to dvd. It makes no sense to me. I just tried to burn it again and couldn't. And, my computer had been off all night so rebooting doesn't seem to work either. I was however able to burn the file to cd. Could my problem have anything to do with how much space I have on my hard drives? I don't know. Or, could it have to do with a message that I sometimes get about my video card being out of date? I don't even know what a video card is. I've gotten that message since installing this software 2 months ago. I really appreciate your help. Thank you.

In addition to what Daithi said, reboot between burns.

Unfortunately rebooting didn't help. My computer was off all night and I still couldn't burn the file to dvd this morning. However, I was able to burn the file to a cd. I can't understand why I can burn the same file to a cd many times, yet I can't burn a file more than once to a DVD. Makes no sense to me. Could it have anything to do with how much space is on my hard drives? Appreciate your time and help. Thanks.

It's possible you may have limited space on the drive - hard to say really. Remember as well that a DVD source is going to be a LOT larger than a CD one (4+ GB as opposed to 700 MB) so that could have some relevance.

What do disk properties show?

Also - a hard drive that is on its last legs may have bad sectors - the only way to check that would be a full chkdsk run at boot to thoroughly examine the drive

The thing to remember about CRC errors is they refer to the source file - if you ever tried to open a corrupted download or copy from a bad floppy you'd have seen them (I have seen it a lot over the years and they always referred to a corrupted source).
