Creator 8 Causes Windows Media Player Problem

jasreed

Question

I am having a problem with Windows Media Player 9 playing MPG files from a web site. It shows the first frame and you hear the sound. I can close Windows Media Player and reopen to the same link and it will play ok. What is happening is that the mpg file must be saved or cached on C drive to play. Why I am talking about this on Roxio 8 discussion is that I learned uninstalling Roxio 8 it will make it work correctly. I reinstall Roxio 8 and the problem is back again. I only notice this happening on MPG files, WMV files work correctly. This wasn't a problem on Version 7.5. Does anyone know of a work around for this problem?

What problem are you posting about? A bit more information would be helpful perhaps a completely new thread since there have been several issues discussed and they are not all the same

Read the thread, these are all about the SAME issue. When you install EMC 8, windows media player no longer plays .mpg or .mpeg files when you click a web page link. You either have to download the file and play it off of the disk or stop the player and click the link a second time so it will play the file from cache. The files freeze on the last frame, and the audio continues to play normally. :)

EMC 8 vs WMP 10

What's the status on this issue? I was about to buy online, but would rather wait for more information or resolution then deal with this headache.

Are there any other Gocha's with EMC 8 ?? I've been using 7.x for sometime now. I only burn data CDs for software distribution to my clients.

Thanks.

This problem is reproduceable with WMP 10 also.

Since confirming earlier in this thread that I had the problem with WMP10, I have done two things:

1. Installed IE7beta2 preview.

2. In WMP10, Tools, options, I checked connect to the internet, click apply, OK

Now if I click on one of the streaming links (one of the three bottom videos) on above quoted site, WMP10, connects, buffers the whole file and plays it.

If I don't do 2. I get a message:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. If the file is located on the Internet, connect to the Internet. If the file is located a removable storage card, insert the storage card."

This message appears despite the fact that I am connected...

I disagree with lpissonitte, This thread has over 2550 viewings and I hav,nt heard from Roxio that they are looking into this. Reading other threads told me that another member believes they are working on it but that was third party info.

Besides thanking you, I just wanted to post like lBisonette so I can become a GURU by rewriting previous post with a few changes, but I won't pat Roxio on the back JUST because they are sponsoring this forum.

So Roxio, have you read this thread and are you working on it? A response would be much appreciated.

What is this forum for anyway. No one answers any questions or adresses issues?

It is not: a way to contact, or report an issue to, Sonic/Roxio. (Altho fortunately, they do on occasion post information here)

It is: a place for USERS to exchange ideas or help each other with issues. Many users answer many posts. As users, none of us can 'address' any issues in regards to 'fixing' any parts of the program. Only Roxio/Sonic can do that. Based on a post (in another topic), They are aware of this issue and are working on it. When they have a fix, I'm sure they'll post it.

My first post. If the original issue hasn't been resolved, let me take a shot at it. I was noticing the same issue - video freezing on a frame, but the audio playing just fine. What it turned out to be was that when installing EMC8, it becomes the default for mpg and WMV video files - that causes the problem. I went into Widows Media Player and confirmed that those video formats were grayed, indicating that WMP was no longer the default player. I recehcked them, and all is well once again.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info, You are an example of the people I stated that work above and beyond to find ways of getting EMC8 to work with your configuration. I didn,t think anyone would make progress with this problem. Thanks for giving me some hope that these issues can be fixed without the help of Roxio.

You are something else. Larry has helped a multitude of people in the time that he has posted on these forums. I am really surprised that he tried to help you. Even if your problem was solved, it is doubtful that you would be satisfied. You impress me as being the proverbial pisser and moaner.

Thanks Bruce. Appreciate the kind words.

In actuality, I never did try to 'help' or post anything in reply to 'that' user. All of my posts in this topic were to others. So I don't know why he suddenly felt the need to verbally attack me. No matter, I just added him to my 'ignore' list so anything he posts will be out of site for me.

For anyone else who cares to note, I see some others have posted workarounds that the have found that may be helpful for now. For that, Thank You. That's the main purpose of these forums, to share ideas and information with your fellow users. Also, if one carefully reads thru this whole topic, in post #10 it is noted by a Roxio rep that they have a fix that is being tested for the original issue related to WMP 10. I would suspect then that they were able to finally replicate the issue (with help from some users) and that a fix will be included in an update at some point in time.

I also have this issue of having to double click an mpg for it to play correctly.. It is clearly an issue with the Roxio 8 application being installed. My guess that anyone else who's tried this application has the issue. Any update on that possible fix. It's a nuisance.

This is unbelievable. I have the exact same problem. Streaming only works now with the files that are buffered, like WMV files. Every other type of file you get the first frame of video then its frozen with audio.

The only way to make it play is to click a local file first, then back to the one you want to stream, and it works once then breaks again.

Please Roxio, fix this.

I don't understand how are you guys not having any problem, if you did something and worked, please explain the steps. I have tried going to file type and select all, but the problem is still there...only first frame sound for a little than all stops.

I am experiencing this same phenon. with my system, EMC 8.05 Win xp sp2 and wmp 10. Any fixes yet?? Do not have this prob. with EMC 7 or 7.5

I haven't found any fixes yet. I uninstalled EMC 8 to get rid of the problem. I tried to install EMC 7.5 and it will not work now but that is another problem for a new thread. Sure hope that someone finds a fix to the problem as I like EMC 8 better and would like to go back to using it.

And where do I find the other posts.

This is the only one I have found that talks about this issue.

Can anybody say that with emc 8 and xp sp2 is not having this issue, or that they did have it and did something to make it work?

Inside this topic is where I was refering to. Like post #41 at the top of this page (3), this one:

If you're having this problem...

1) Click on Start --> Run

2) In the run dialogue box and type in:

regsvr32 /u mcspmpeg.ax

3) Click OK. You should get a message like "DllUnregisterServer in mcspmpeg.ax succeeded."

4) Now see if you still have problems streaming MPEG files in Media Player and post a reply.....

Well put, let me add that this condition happened to me on 2 computers running XP pro with SDP2 while using the retail cd. The condition starts right after installation of EDMC 8 and continues after the 8.05 update. On one computer I reinstalled SP2 and the condition is still there.

I should add that one of the computers is new and EMC 8 was the first software installed on this new Laptop. This Laptop came with Nero 6.6.0.15, Power DVD 6.0.0.1424, HotLLAMA Media Player 1.1.0.96 and of course Window Media Player 10.0.0.3803 installed.

OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Professional

Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600

System Manufacturer Gateway

System Model MX7525

Processor Mobile AMD Athlon 64 Proccessor 4000 + (2.6 Gig)

Total Physical Memor 1,024.00 MB

Harddrive Fujitsu 100 Gig

Video ATI Mobility 256 Hyperthread

TSST corp DVD+-RW Dual Layer

Ethernet Physical and Wireless internal

6 in 1 card reader

IEEE 1394 Via OHIC compliant Host Controller

AC97 Soft Data Fax Modem with Smart ICP

Conexant AC Link Audio

EMC 8 was the first software on the laptop? What do you consider software, then? There is no doubt a conflict with other software on your computer. Suggestion, with the exception of WMP, get rid of all the burning programs, reboot, and install EMC 8. If it works, one by one, install the other programs.

Let us know how it goes for you.

That did not work for me. But it put me on the right track. When I installed Sony Movie Studio had same problem. Their knowledge base suggested searching for mcspmpeg.ax and another .ax file and renaming them to xxx.ax.hide. Worked on Sony. Since one of these was the one Patarox suggested, I did a seach and found it in a Roxio shared folder, renamed it and Voila!! Media Creator does not mess up WMP anymore. I went back to the Sony folder and un-named the other one and WMP still works ok. Apprently only the one file is necessary to rename.

By the way when you go to the Main Concepts, the providers of this codec, knowledge base - it is always not their fault, it is the programmers using their product, but the products I have installed (from different companies) that have their file in it both have acted up. Is it the programmers using the product or is the programmers writing the tool that is at fault. Can add MainConcepts standard reply to this list 1) the check is in the mail, 2) sure honey I will mary you, 3) I'm from the government and I am here to help you.

fastmix,

Well, since not all pc's have all the same software & hardware, the only thing I can think of as to why some of us have not experienced the problems in this thread, is that we just don't have whatever combination of things installed that are causing it to happen. Did either of the other posts where someone figured out a workaround work for you?
