REDWAGON
It's just a matter of a short time cd, when our operating systems will be loaded on to a flash drive. That's been in the works for some time now. The thing that still needs a lot more work on is making it large enough. 32GB is just the start, I think. Frank... Beerman
Aren't flash devices more susceptible to static electricity?

"Military and aerospace customers have been buying so-called solid-state flash drives for about a decade. Some of the drives have capacities of 256GB and are quite sophisticated. "They are in data recorders in airplanes," Oren said. "Breakage sometimes happens with military targets." The Win98 SE has the original 4GB drive, disconnected, and the 16GB drive (25% used) that is now the Main drive. The Win2K has a 12.7GB (30% used) drive. (I have a little more to load, tho, before I have all I want on it.) I have an empty 10GB drive around, the result of some miscommunicaton. The WinXP SP2 has a 40GB Main drive (40% used) and a 10GB drive which holds what used to be on Zip discs. 32GB sounds fine to me Lynn
REDWAGON
Seems like a thousand years ago Lynn, I had an IBM PCjr computer that had a 10MB hard drive in it. At that time I thought you could put the whole world in that big a memory. Boy, did that change fast !!! So when one thinks about 32GB today and thinks that's plenty---Just wait a short time and it will be just a wee bit And Paul, if flash memory is really that susceptible to static electricty (which is probably true), there sure are a lot of digital camers out there that are vulnerable. gi7omy
Actually Paul just about every single thing in a computer is static sensitive - don't do what I did in a moment of madness and turn on the light in the room with a stick of RAM in the other hand - guaranteed ZAAAAAAP!! I knew you have to be careful when working with the computer especially when it's opened but I think I read somewhere that these thumb drives were more likely to be affected by static. I also read PC World mag that took 3 of these thumb drives, washed one in the washing machine, rolled over another and set one on fire for a brief time. 2 of the 3 still worked but I can't remember which though I think the washed one was fine.
