azcamper
After installing Easy CD & DVD Burning (should be latest version since it was recently purchased from Best Buy), the HP840b DVD SuperMulti Drive/CD Writer drive was not recognized by ECDB software or existing HP media center software. I uninstalled the ECDB software and now the optical drive is working OK except it won't recognize blank DVDs. Also SONIC MYDVD Plus software says "No Drive Detected" in the "Destination Selection" field. All of this used to work. At this point, I am just trying to get the optical drive to work the way it did prior to installing/uninstalling ECDB. More info: Windows XP Media Edition with all Microsoft updates. CD-R CD-RW read and write all works. DVD read of video and data disks works. I have run "roxiozap.exe" and "DriveFixEZ_Uninstalled.exe" which had no affect. I have also been to the HP support site and installed the HP840b latest firmware and lightscribe software updates. I suspect something got messed up in the registry and am thinking I need to do the "remove HP840b in device manager, edit the registry and reboot to reinstall driver". Does this sound like the logical thing to try at this point. Any help and suggestions would be appreciated.
lynn98109
Congrats on you brand-new fancy DVD-DL burner. http://209.85.165.104/search?q=cache:b_k8P...t=clnk&cd=1 Now you need some brand-new fancy DVD-DL burning software. The earliest Roxio Version to support DVD-DL is EMC 7. Easy CD/DVD Burning is a re-issue of Version 6, and the last software update was in 2003 - they didn't have DVD-DL back then. james_hardin
XP does have an affinity for losing drives whenever burning software is installed/uninstalled… The first thing to try is removing the device in Device Manager and rebooting. Note if there is an error code in Device Manager before you remove the drive. If there is, you may have to go the Upper/Lower Filter fix from MS. As Lynn noted, even if you get the drive recognized, you will not be able to use DL media with this old version of Roxio.
azcamper
OK.. After I get this thing working again, I will have to upgrade to newer software. Prior to removing the device in device manager, there were no error conditions shown. I removed the device and rebooted. During reboot, got the message "new hardware detected HP840 drive" then a second message "new hardware detected CD-ROM drive" and then continued bootup. When done, same problem. What next? Thanks, azcamper
james_hardin
Do you have some RW media to play with? If so, use XP Burn to see if XP can address the drive. If it does, you may want to consider the Trial Version of V9, here, to see if it will address the burner. It is not supposed to, but V6 was written 3+ years ago and it may not be able to address this particular burner.
azcamper
I was able to resolve this problem by using the XP "system restore" function and going back one day before the Roxio install. It was still very painful, because after the restore, there were a few other things that didn't work right that I had to fix or re-install. I learned a lesson from this experience: read the software box closely for system compatability before doing an install. It is too bad the Roxio install software didn't automatically detect my drive and abort the installation, or at the very least, provide a warning. Thanks again for the help ! Unfortunately, you don't get warnings about things that weren't dreamed of when the software was written. Lynn
james_hardin
Likewise I have installed V6 and later V8 on a PC that doesn't even have a burner! I would not have appreciated it if the installer had quit because there wasn't a burner. On that PC I have made a few ISO files for DVD burns then moved the ISO file to a PC that had a burner. My wife also uses Roxio to convert Music CDs for her mp3 player – no burner required.
