a92typhoon
I burned my data across 29 CD-R's (I have now read all of your posts, it will never happen again) and I have recovered everything except the "split" files. I have 3 files that are split that I desperately have to have. I found this post from Feb 2006 from another user: "After poking around a bit, I discovered a hidden file on the DVD called $OVRSPN$.INI. It contained a section called [split File 1] listing a single file. The second DVD has both a [split File 1] and a [split File 2] (this set spans 5 DVDs), and it appears that, on the second DVD, #1 is for the tail end of the file split between disc 1 and disc 2, while [split File 2] is for the file that was split between disc 2 and disc 3. I simply copied the file listed in [split File 1] off of the first disc and then copied the same file off of the second disc and appended the second file to the end of the first file. This worked! All "retrieve.exe" does to spanned files is append each part to the previous part." Can anybody point me in the right direction as to how to do this? Special software needed? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
lynn98109
I would suggest a recovery program, which looks directly at the data - both cdroller (www.cdroller.com) and ISOBuster (www.isobuster.com) have impressive testimonials on their websites and in the Roxio boards. Both have a "trial" Version that lets you see if anything can be recovered before you have to pay. Lynn
james_hardin
It depends on What the files are and if Compression was used… If Compression was used, doubtful since you recovered other files, you must use Recover to un-compress them. If the files were text files you could probably open 2 sessions of NotePad and copy the second one into the first. If they were Word Processor files, movies, pictures or almost everything but a text file, I do not think you can patch them together again. If you knew the file structure and had a bit editor you could probably do it but the rest of us don't have the knowledge/skills/software needed… You might be able to do this with Recovery.exe operating on recovering a single file. I played with this some, years ago, and I found if your were persistent, it worked after several tries. One quick question! What version of V6 did you write these with? a92typhoon
I was using Creator Classic, V6.1.0.91 and my error message after starting Retrieve was "Restore has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I'm glad they are sorry, but it doesn't help me after sitting at this computer 30+ hours trying to get my stuff back. I have a few ideas / questions that maybe you can give me help with, I'm gonna start experimenting so if something works I'll post it. I created 29 folders on the desktop and copied all 29 CD's into those folders, I can review all of my unsplit data, all I have to do is copy and merge them back into the proper folders. I have reviewed all 29 of the $OVRSPN$ files and written down which files are split across the CD's. I probably have 6 .jpg files, 2 .mpg files that I would like to have, but not critical. The critical file I'm worried about is the Netscape Mail folder that is split across 3 discs. When you said something about the data being compressed I was worried, but when browsing the disc folders, I viewed one of the split .jpg files and the picture was physically viewable, just half of it was greyed out. Some of the others (the mpg's played, rather then 60 sec they were 30 or whatever) appeared the same way, almost like they were physically cut down the middle. My thought was re-install Netscape mail, rename my split folders inbox1, inbox2, inbox3, paste it into the default folder, and see what happens. The only smart thing I did in this whole process was to save the Creator Classic Project File (*.rcl) onto my flash drive. When I open it with Creator Classic, it shows all the files there, asking for 29 CD's, like they are ready to burn again. Is my data compressed in this folder? If so, can I delete all of the data from the multi-disc project except for the "split files", burn them to new CD's and see if they can then be retrieved? I read somewhere that Easy Creator had a problem with projects over 10 discs, and every disc after #9 is labeled with a ?. "NextVolume=Jan2007 Backup_? FirstVolume=Jan2007 Backup_8" Whether I try to burn from the existing *.rcl project file, or I physically copy the file pieces out of the folders I copied to the desktop and burn them with a new project, if I keep the CD burning to less then 9 CD's will I be alright? I would expect I would need no more then 3 CD's. I have purchased ISOBuster and it seems to be a great program, but from what I've read in its help file and online, it doesn't really tell me how to deal with split files across multiple discs. I can see where single files on single discs could be recovered and worked on, but not across multiple discs. Maybe I'm missing something.
lynn98109
I can answer PART of that (James is the expert on Retrieve) - the .rcl file is the "shoping list". If the groceries are still on the same shelves (and the files in the same places), then you can re-burn. If, as I suspect, the files are deleted, it won't do anything useful. To paste the pieces together, you need an editor. Notepad MIGHT work for the email files (using copy - CTRL+C - and paste - CTRL+V). (save both pieces to Hard Drive, open one in Notepad, open the other in a different Notepad, copy the bottom one and past to the top one, save as a .htm or .html file) But I really am not knowledgeable about that kind of thing beyond .html and .doc Lynn
james_hardin
I don't recall when the disc count was fixed but I think that problem was confined to V6.0. The info file kept the disc count in Hex whereas the discs were numbered in Integer. Thus Retrieve was looking for a disc A or B when it should have been after disc 10 or 11. Disc 15 = Hex F and 16 = Hex 10 etc. I think that is in the retrieve.ini file. Open that one with NotePad and see if the number of discs is listed as 29 or 1D. I don't think ISO Buster understands Roxio's Split process and I don't know of anything that does… Your rcl file is merely a set of notes about the project. At least it gives you a list you can use but that is all. I am curious why Retrieve.exe is closing? Do you have IE7 or Media Player 11 installed? I used PC Restore from Dell to return the machine to original configuration, and the first thing I did after restore was to attempt to load my data back, I haven't even installed printer or anything else. I'm gonna burn split files to CD and see what Isobuster does with them.

Note the Disc Count-1d. That should have been 29 instead of the Hex equivalent of '1d'! I have a plan (theory) on how you might recover these files but I need to create a Set and test my grand plan… Should have something for you by Wed.
