Windows Hangs at Blue Starting Screen after install

tearendt

Question

Orginally I posted the following on the Installation Tab. I tried several suggestions to no avail.

"I purchased EMC9 after reading a great review from our local newspaper tech guy..... and I wanted to consolidate various media applications that reside on my PC. I dove right into the install and faced a terminal hang-up at start. Nothing would budge the lock-up.... hard re-boot...F8....drop kick....etc. I re-installed XP Pro, rebooted and started reading the support forum. I have tried everything suggested from uninstalling anything related to media creation and disabling zone alarm and norton.... all to no avail. After many hours and the loss of my legacy media burning apps, that did work.... I have come to the realization that this program will not work on many systems for no apparent reason. There is most likely no way to re-coup the $99 and certainly not my time. Does anyone have some last attempt magic before I engage in a stressful conversation at the 1-888 phone number?"

I've called Roxio tech support and they suggested steps for a clean re-install....... No luck....still hangs. I tried to return to Best Buy and since the product was opened, they would not refund. I called Roxio for a refund and since the product was not purchased dirctly from them....no refund. So much for warranty claims.

I would still like to very much use the product but....really need help. My system specs are as follows:

Board is Asus P4533 with 2.4Ghz Intel P4 processor. Windows XP Pro SP2. IE 7.0. Netscape 7.2. Video card by Jaton NVidia 3DForce 4 Ti4400. 1 GB of RAM. Liton CVD-ROM LTD163D player and Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-104 burner. Creative SB Audigy sound card. Wireless keyboard and mouse. 150 GB internal hard drive. 150 and 500 GB external hard drives (music and photos of my grandkids). If there is any other usefull info ....I can provide it.

Roxio support was not much help..... but this forum seems to be my best hope for resolution.

Thanks, Tim

I had the same problem on install with my system....after I disabled anything Roxio added to the startup folder , it booted up ok.

Hope this helps! :)

Usually Roxwatch is the culprit there - I would disable that and also D2D (I wouldn't use that for a king's ransom) but I do it via msconfig to stop them loading.

Unfortunately the OP's post suggests he can't get that far - perhaps booting in safe mode and then running msconfig may help

Thanks. I already knew HOW to do a normal removal of a program. I just wanted to know how to do it without affecting the other programs.

As it turned out, I didn't have to do anything to IE 7. I kept it, rolled back the WMP 11 to the previous version, completely uninstalled McAfee Anti-Virus, got rid of any "write to disk" programs (such as HP's Memory Disk program that comes with most of their printers), installed EMC9, reinstalled McAfee and it's been smooth sailing ever since. I'm functioning at 100% WITH IE7 already installed. However, I have to wonder if the downloaded version is a little different than the boxed retail version. Afterall, they've had time to make repairs to problems with IE7 with the downloaded version. Maybe my copy is an edited version? (I just purchased and downloaded it yesterday 1/24/07).

Both versions are, to the best of my knowledge, identical (well one comes with a dead tree and the other has a pdf downloadable manual)

IE7 - it works - sometimes, but it's very hit and miss. Off the subject, it also has problems as a browser. Quite a few websites just won't work with it - in fact, a friend of mine who designs web-sites told me that people he knew were considering an extra charge to make sites IE7 compatible (he was joking - I think)

Success....... Thanks to both helpers. Not sure which of the remedies worked but, I went back to the update video driver suggestion to first remove the exisiting driver before re-installing the update. After that I updated Windows Media from 9 to 10..... and I went back to IExpl6. I was all set to disable all the Roxio startup stuff in msconfig by going to safe mode.....but darn thing started. Thanks again, Tim

A bit late but I'd have suggested doing the install before IE7 went in.

My normal method for installation after a reformat would firstly the OS and then the latest drivers from the makers' websites and thenl MS updates (excluding IE7 and WMP11 - I will NOT have them on this computer unless they're forced in), then Ashampoo and anti-virus (similar to Norton Utilities) and also Adaware. I clean the system with Ashampoo and also run Adaware - then I install apps, starting with EMC, with the AV turned OFF prior to installing anything.

Did you update the video drivers btw?

Well, I'm no different than the rest of you who have had this problem. I couldn't resolve it in Safe Mode while disabling anything Roxio in the MSCONFIG start up items. It still hangs. I'm not sure how to go back to IE 6 (since I've loaded other progams on my computer since it's install) without causing other problems with other programs. I recently updated my video card driver before purchasing EMC9 today, so I know that's not the problem. I was running EC/D6 before this with absolutely NO problems. I do have Media Player 11 on my computer though.

So does anyone have any further things to try without having to dismantle my entire system just to load this software????
