Will Tivo-to-Go Work with Tivo HD?

Charles Outcalt

Question

Hello Everyone,

Just read about the new Tivo-to-Go available as part of the new Toast. The price is steep, but I'm thinking about biting the bullet and buying this.

However, I wanted to ask whether any of you knew if this product would work with my Tivo Series 3 hi def recorder. I have a sinking feeling it will not. . .

Thanks!

Hi there.

Congrats on having a TiVO Hi-Def box. I want one of those, but I'm too cheap to part with the big bucks to buy one.

I was under the impression that TiVO2Go functionality works only with Series 2 TiVOs. Before investing in the Toast software, I'd make sure that it works. Perhaps you can email TiVO technical support to get a definitive answer. I've checked the TiVO discussion groups and didn't see anything definitive.

You might also try:

TiVO Download Manager (http://thebenesch.com/tdm/)

Which is a free app that can download programs from TiVO and decode them, then transcode them for iPod or MP4 with custom parameters. The program works quite well.

Thanks for the ideas, Mike. I'll look into that tech support option. From what I've seen, Tivo isn't so great at responding, but it's worth a try.

BTW, the new hi def box is really great, BUT getting it to work with the Comcast cable cards took 3 separate visits, and about 20 hours of phone time in follow up. From what I can tell, the issues were with Comcast, but, unless you have a great cable provider, I wouldn't assume this will be a smooth process.

TiVo-To-Go and Multi-Room-Viewing have not been enabled yet for the Series 3 HD TiVo. This a limitation due to Cablelabs certification, but most people feel that it will be enabled within the year. I think this is the reason for the free one year service on the previous TiVo if you used the lifetime transfer option.

Thank you very much for this definitive, but depressing, answer :) Guess I'll need to wait to plunk down that $ for the new Toast.

Thanks again.
