Motion Pictures and AAC/AIFF

Question

Hi,

I just installed Toast 8.0 w/o any problems. I was just testing the various apps and noticed something I hadn't experienced before when using Motion Pictures. This problem happens with both MP 212 and 213.

I take a group of photos from iphoto and one song from itunes and select them in MP. If the audio file I selected is an Apple lossless or MPEG, I'm home free. If however the audio file I select is either AAC (unprotected) or AIFF one of two things will occur when clicking on "full screen".

1. The app crashes immediately.

2. The slideshow plays but the audio quits after 2-3 seconds.

If I try to "make movie" it allows me to select the type (I've tried Toast and QT) and then name the file and where I want it saved to and then it starts the encoding process and after 2-3 minutes, the app crashes.

Everything works fine while using either Apple Lossles or MPEG file formats.

I can reproduce this everytime and on both my PM G5 and my PB G4. Both are running qt 713 and 10.4.8.

I do remember several other having problems with MP crashing but can't recall the specifics.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Any suggestions?

I have about 80% of my music (non ITS) in the AAC format. Is there a simple way to convert them to MPEG?

When I used the Motion Pictures HD media browser to select music for a slideshow from my iTunes library the app didn't crash but the slideshow only contained the first couple of seconds of the music. Seems this was a problem last year too. Why have the media browser access iTunes, if iTunes encoded music won't work?

I would be curious to see if you export the audio into an AAC file using toast rather then itunes what the behavior would be. I remember problems last year where Motion Pictures could work with a Toast produced AAC file but had problems now and again with one made by iTunes.

Hi John,

Well, I just did take a group of AAC files in iTunes and selected them in Toast (audio) then exported them as Apple Lossless (m4a) and used them again in MP and they played fine w/o crashes. I couldn't find where I could export them in Toast as an AAC file, but maybe I missed it. Is it there? If so where.

Its' piculiar to me that Toast dosen't like AAC or AIFF files that were created by iTunes but will take Apple Lossless and MPEG.

I guess that's the worked around.

Sorry to hear that others have had the same frustrations.

I own all of my music on CDs. In order to use them in MP HD I have to re-import the song from the CD to AIFF. That seems to work perfectly. Suppose importing to Apple Lossless or MPEG will likely work. The convert tool in iTunes did not fix the problem, however.

:) I will try that. For now I re-import using iTunes but to AIFF, and then all works fine.

Are they planning to fix this? As new users of MP we were very discouraged until I did a lot of trial and error to get to a fix.

Generally I like the tool. It is very user friendly, and projects can go together rather quickly. We especially like the motion aspect. Very nice.

Cheers

I just purchased Motion Pictures HD last night (just that module) and of course experiencing the same problem described here. Having problems with the .m4a files, as described program repeatedly crashes when using those files. System seems to be fine with .mp3 files. I'm conversant with visual file extensions, but new to audio. Could someone give me explicit directions on how to get .m4a files into format that's readable by MPHD? Thanks!

Choose the Advanced Tab in iTunes Preferences and select Apple Lossless Encoder with the button next to Import Using. Close Preferences. Select the tracks in your playlist and choose Convert Selection to Apple Lossless in the iTunes Advanced menu. You now will have two copies of each track, one of which is Apple Lossless that should work fine with Motion Pictures.
