CD-Text Title and Songs of CD

Judboy

Question

I am having an issue of burning an audio cd that I give a title and name tracks with in Toast 8, but when it burns my MAC and iTunes shows it as a previous title I had burned in iTunes a while back. Any ideas?

When I burn a data disc it seems to keep the Toast title.

Macs don't read CD Text. You can see that the CD Text was burned to the disc by inserting the audio CD and choosing Disc Info from the Toast Recorder menu.

Macs create and read a CD Info database file written to the Mac's hard drive. This file can be updated by entering new information in iTunes. So you can edit the names there and they should be correct the next time you insert the CD.

At dougscripts.com there is an Applescript call CD Text to CD Info that can automate the process of updating the Mac's CD info.

I've also noticed that the disc cataloging application included with Toast 8 will read the album and track names from CD Text.

How exactly does this catalog deal work? Does it do it automatically every time I burn or just when I manually tell it to do it?

I'm still getting a feel for this. Here's how I think it works. It will automatically make a catalog file of an individual data disc (when you have that option selected). It does not catalog video or audio discs. However, you can open DiscCatalogMaker and do batch cataloging of multiple discs into a single catalog file. I've compared the RE version with the current full version and the Toast-bundled version is up-to-date and seems to have every feature of the full version except for an option to automatically check for application updates.

If you use it for cataloging audio CDs it will read the CD Text if your Mac (iTunes) has not given the CD any other title or track names. Otherwise it will use the names assigned by iTunes. I inserted a commercial audio CD and the application asked if I wanted to catalog it. Before I checked okay iTunes downloaded the title/artist/track info from CDDB. When I clicked okay DiscCatalogMaker reported that it couldn't find the disc. This is because the one it had been looking at was now renamed. I reselected the disc and the import was fine. It doesn't select the artist name, but you can edit the name of the disc after it is in the database.

The manual for DiscCatalogMaker is in its Help menu.

DiscCatalogMaker is kind of lame... you can't just drag a file from the catalog to your desktop, pop in the CD and your done. Dragging a file to the desktop results in a strange clipping file (what's it for?). The app only seems to point to the original file. You have to right-click on a file or folder, select Show Original, pop in the disc it asks for and THEN you can copy the file to your desktop.

Every other catalog app I've used works the way you'd expect except this one. Maybe I missed something. The "help" is not very helpful at all. Oh well.

You can submit artist/album/track info to Gracenote through either iTunes or Toast. The audio CD must be burned first before this option is active. In Toast the selection titled "Submit CD Track Names" under the Disc menu.

Your Mac doesn't burn CD Text info to the disc? What Mac and drive are you using? You can see the CD Text Info by inserting the audio CD and choosing Disc Info in the Recorder menu if it is present.

Thanks for the info about gracenote, I am using a powerbook g4, Matshita dvd-r uj-845E I am able to insert the disc and choose disc info to get the text to show up, but I still need to figure out how to get it to show up on the desk top when inserted just like industry cds, Do I need a pc with a different program? is there anything else out there?

Although Toast has the feature to upload track info to CDDB I've usually done this with iTunes so I'll explain how to do it that way.

1. Insert the audio CD

2. Where the CD appears in iTunes use the Get Info window to enter all the artist, album, track, genre info.

3. In the Advanced window choose Submit CD Track Names

That's all there is to it.

One caveat is you're supposed to upload track info for CDs that will be in circulation rather than for a single compilation you created for yourself.

My mac will read industry cd text (from major labels) and I-tunes will get it's database info from gracenote. does anyone know how to get this information on the disc, or on gracenotes database?

I forgot to mention that I am not able to burn cd text even though there is an option in the software, any ideas?
