The (still functional) Win98 SE has under 4GB of data on the new-ish 16GB HD; the orignal 3.7GB drive is a backup and is obviously under 4GB.

The Win2K has 3.9GB of data on a 12.7GB HD.

The WinXP has about 40% of the 40GB HD in use, but that includes Norton GoBack, which is probably going on half of that, and WinXP is itself a large OS. I think without the GoBack part, it'd fit on that 12GB Flash drive.

So, when will they replace HDs with Flash Drives?

The project to provide kids in the 3rd World with computers already uses a Flash memory instead of a Hard Drive.

Actually, Verbatim is using 1" HDs for these drives, not flash drives. Flash memory has a finite number of rewrite cycles, so I wouldn't want to depend on it for the day-to-day operation of my PC.

Thanks for pointing out that they're using HDs. I completely missed that in reading the article.

It's a bit pricey right now, but when the price comes down, I'd rather have the hard drive too.

Are you referring to the Verbatim Stor'n'Go, or to the BBC newsitem on the One Computer Per CHild laptop that you quoted?

Well, both, because in your reply that I quoted, you asked when they'd replace HDs with Flash drives. In this case, what is being used like a flash drive by Verbatim is actually a 1" HD, and I'd rather have the HD. And I definitely don't think I'd want to replace my HD with flash memory with it's finite write/re-write life, as in the $100 laptop.

I picked up a 1 GB USB Flash drive for $17.99 at Target today. Haven't tried it yet though.

I definitely need to pick me up one of those in the near future. Slightly more convenient than the 80GB USB drive I carry back and forth to work, but that'll keep coming anyway since it has my music collection on it. :)

It was on sale and it actually works! http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=1-...asin=B000I6G3W0

Attaches to my keyring so it shouldn't get lost...... as long as I don't lose my keys..... :)

Lots of stores have these things on sale. Frys has an 8 GB for $109 after rebate. http://shop2.outpost.com/product/5016415

I've seen different models of flash drives on sale in almost all stores that sell computer accessories. Just let your fingers do your comparison shopping on the net.

Flash drives have finally gotten cheap enough for me to buy one. :D
