Data CD Rom Copying/ Burning Problems.

bds1958

Question

Just tried to copy a data CD rom.

1. Using Disc Copier it appeared to burn ok but when trying to open it in my Rom drive it would not recognise the disc......(got the "insert disc" message).

2. Used Classic Creator to extract the files and burn which appeared to go ok until I tried to open in the Rom drive......same result....wouldn't recognise the disc.... (got the "insert disc" message again).

So I then burned the disc to Hard drive as Image.

Loaded image into Roxio emulated disc drive and it ran o.k.

So I thought problem solved but no.

Burned image file to disc which appeared to burn o.k. but same result when trying to open disc in other drives...... (got "the insert disc" message).

All firmware to drives are current.

Using Verbatim 52X CD-R discs.

I can burn Audio and Dvd o.k.

Any suggestions?

First of all - is this a commercial program CD?

The problem there is there is a growing tendency to add some form of 'protection' (especially in games CDs) to prevent a copy from working.

I know that you are supposed to be allowed to make one back-up copy of commercial software - unfortunately the makers have decided that what you're legally allowed doesn't cut it - you do what they tell you

It is a commercial programme cd.

If it is copy protected I'll need to search for something to "fix it" because it is a simple art programme that my wife, who is a nursery school teacher, wants to use in class without damaging the master disc when used in "the classroom environment". i.e trashing the back ups when damaged.

Any suggestions via a private post would be appreciated as I know how sensitive these forums are to the information I seek.

What is the original disc name?

What protection did the program say it had?

cd

I used a little program called ClonyXXL which wasn't specific in the type of protection it just indicated that the disc had some form of protection.

The original disc name I don't remember as my wife has taken it back to school with the back up copy. It was only an educational art interactive ROM for kids.

Depending on what program you use in the suite determines what kind of image file you can create. You can make a .c2d,a .gi and also an .iso file (and maybe a couple others).

I've gotta believe it was luck or you found a loophole.Roxio EMC was not intended to be used to copy copyrighted material.

Can someone remind me which program gives which file output.

Thanks for the info.

I downloaded and ran a programme which confirmed the disc was copy protected.

Not one to be beaten I tried something else. Here goes.........

I burned another image to hard drive in RAW mode (what exactly is RAW mode?) and didn't run it through the Roxio emulated drive. On comparing the file with the previous one that ran on that drive they were 2 different file types.

The one run through the Roxio drive was file type C2D.

The other not run was file type GI.

Does the Roxio emulated drive change the file type?

Anyway I tried a burn of the GI file image in RAW mode and it worked.

The resulting disc auto started when run.

Can anyone explain this or was I just lucky.

The real problem is one of the 'protection' systems throws in 'bad sectors' that the app is programmed to deal with - a copy won't have these, so it won't work

I can appreciate the problem - I ran the computer suite in a youth club here and the CDs looked as if they'd been used as frisbees after the kids finished with them. All I could do was to get a 'CD grinder' and spend an age taking off the scratches http://www.skipdoctor.co.uk/
