PhotoSuite won't open and VideoWave hangs

ally

Question

Dell Dimension 3000

2.8GHz

80 GB Hard Drive

512 MB DDRam

Intel 82865G Graphics Controller

Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-110D

Sound Blaster Live! 24 Bit

DirectX version 9.c

Have Installed all the most up to date drivers

Have Windows media player version 10

IE version 6

Have read through all the threads in the forum that could possibly have anthing to do with my problem and

followed all suggestions

Have downloaded the bo_hotfix.exe patch (didn't help)

Have done the msconfig and made sure all roxio boxes were checked (they were)

Have no other cd/dvd authoring software on my computer

Have done clean uninstall and clean reinstall (several times)

Made new user with administration privileges and did clean reinstall - ALL TO NO AVAIL!!!!

I cannot get PhotoSuite to open - after the initial screen comes up with "PhotoSuite 9 has encountered a

problem and needs to close" and then will send an error report to microsoft.

VideoWave will open and I can import pictures but then when I try to anything else such as add

transistions, video effects or text (can add music) the following will happen

A Microsoft Visual C + + Runtime Libarary screen comes up saying Runtime Error

Program:C:\Program Files\Roxio\VideoUI\VideoWave9. exe abnormal program termination

When you click OK on that the next runtime error screen comes up with R6025 - pure virtual function call

and then when you click on that it shuts the program down.

Can anyone please help, I am at my wits end.

Other programs do work and I can write DVDs and CDs and watch DVD but I brought this mainly for

photosuite and vido editing capabilities.

Sorry for the lengthy ramblings but I am determined to see this program work!!!!!!!

Please any help would be greatly appreciated. (I did get this to work on my old crappy dell laptop which has a Nvidia graphics card and that was before updating the driver or anything else. It did tell me my driver was old but still opened all the programs and was able to use them, albeit very slowly) I do want this to work on my desktop which has a bigger hard drive and more memory.

Yours sincerely Ally :)

:) Well #$^@! I tried a repair install when i got home from work today - with Norton turned off - and wouln't you know it, no more error messages! I have not actually tried to capture any video yet, but before i wasn't even getting that part of the program to open, so i am assuming it will work. PhotoSuite opens, now too.

i'm not totally sure if that's all it took, because I tried so many things to fix it, too, and of course didn't write them all down or anything - d'oh!

try a repair install if you haven't. otherwise - with apologies to gi7omy & grandpabruce - maybe it is your graphics chipset

I have had the same exact problem, and i only noticed it a few days ago. It was all running fine before then. I've tried most of the solutions you mention as well, and I am an Admin on the machine, but have not tried re-installing yet. I'm not really sure that will do the trick anyway. The only thing i can immediately think of is it has something to do with Norton SW Premier 2007, which i recently installed, upgrading from NSWP05.

I'm not so sure, Ally, that it's your video card - or lack thereof :) . Did the program ever work on your machine? Was it an upgrade or fresh install? i don't see where you mention that.

From what I've found online, NSW may have changed some .dll's that are shared by both programs, but I'm not so sure which ones or how to fix them. I also have seen mention of WinXP's Data Execution Prevention causing problems, but have set that to be off for all the Roxio programs.

Anyway, it's driving me nuts too, and everything I have searched for online brings me around in circles to another solutions/problem none of which have helped so far. You mentioned that you have been in touch w/Roxio support. Have they been able to tell you anything at all about what it may be? I tried that Roxanne thing, but it seems pretty useless.

The problem is in the Intel graphics chipset - this just can't handle the program

I'd recommend that you get a 'proper' graphics card and install that and use that instead of the on-board graphics supplied

Any recommendations as to which graphics card and will this guarentee that the program will work?

Am curious why the graphics chip I have now would prevent Photosuite from even opening. I could understand if it got hung up afterwards but not to even open the program?

Without knowing what sort of slots you have on the motherboard it's hard to say - but in general a suitable graphics card would be fairly cheap

To check - you need to open the case and look at the row of slots

if they're all white - it's PCI

one brown one set back from the white ones is AGP

one black one set back is PCI-e

Check for ATI or nVidia based cards with a minimum of 128 MB (256 is better)

Most of the graphics parts of EMC9 are handled by the GPU (Graphics Processor on the video card) and if this isn't up to the standard needed, they won't work

No AGP slot (brown one at the end) means you will have to get a PCI graphics card - check with your local suppliers but get one with as much memory as possible

What would worry me tho are the rest of the system specs - no AGP slot would make me think it's an older system - check on the main Roxio site for the minimum requirements and try to exceed those (they will work - but molasses will run down the wall on a winter's day - eventually)

I tried using MojoPac but still PhotoSuite wouldn't open.

Then - I right clicked on the desk top and changed all the graphics settings I could for the intel chip and then retried it again using Mojopac and AMAZINGLY it OPENED!!!!!!! I haven't tried to anything with it yet as my one goal for the last few frustrating weeks is for the darn program to JUST OPEN. Now I am going to try reinstalling it on the regular desktop and see if it will work there

It's a shame that I have to isolate Roxio from all of my previous applications because it won't play nicely with others, but at least it's playing.
Interesting that you automatically assume the problem is with EMC 9 and NOT OTHER SOFTWARE.

I was just reading an article about Intuit's Quickbooks and why it won't run on Vista. Why? Because they have using poor programing practices when using the registry. In fact, Quickbooks isn't even certified for WinXP because of that. Just goes to show that ANY software can be 'stable' and still not be using acceptable practices. When you install many different types of applications, there can all kinds of conflicts like DLLs. Do a search on your computer for MFC*.dll. You'll find that you probably have 30 or 40 copies of the exact same files with different version numbers. Yet another mess created by Microsoft.

This was a fresh install from disks. I have tried every which way to sunday to get it to work - alas to no avail. Technical support - chat - phone and eticket are a lesson in self flagellation and frustration. I have been on the phone support several times - it takes a while to get through and I got cut off a few times but they did give me suggestions to try. Mind you they were the same suggestions that had already been made and each one wanted me to "try that again" I even unistalled norton and did fresh clean reinstall of roxio but still photosuite and video wave didn't work. I finally gave up and just loaded the program on my old dell laptop which only has 256MB ram and everything works (have the same Norton programs on that computer too). If get yours working or find the solution let me know because the laptop is soooo slow

SUCCESS!!!!!! I was getting ready to reformatt thehard drive and tried one last thing. Did a reinstall of windows xp home edition sp2 and now guess what - PhotoSuite now opens!!!!! I must have had corrupt files in windows somewhere (don;t know where exactly) but now it works and I can do transitions in videowave. I know my graphics controller probably isn't the best but this was not the problem. To all you out there having a problem - perservere because the program is a good one when you can get it to work

I will not give up - I will get this program working. I will go NUTS trying to do so. I did a quick search through the forums and there are people who have the exact same chip set (Intel 8265G) that I do and have their programs up and running so I think that my photosuite should open (even if it didn't work very well) I know the install is working because if I network my laptop and open Roxio on it everything works. It just will not open photosuite on the desktop which is where I want it. I can't afford to get a new video card at this time. Has anybody out there had this problem and got it working?

Just a footnot - I've spent the last 2 days on the phone, and online chat with Roxio and not one of the tech guys has said anything about my computer graphics card - in fact they said it should work

ally

It isn't going to work. That computer is old and a low end machine, and even with a new video card, I doubt that it will run EMC 9. I might work with EMC 7.5, though.

I did a google on that Dell, and this was the first hit:

Well did the clean reinstall on the desktop and it won't work. Still works using mojopac so I know its not the issue of having or not having the video card because both ways use the same intel graphics processor. I think there is some porgram or software conflict on my desktop that prevents photosuite from opening. Has anyone out there had a software conflict? (exclude other cd/dvd burning software because I don't have anything besides roxio)

I'm glad to see that someone has had some success. I recently installed EMC 9 on an Dell Inspiron 8600 with an ATI Mobility 9700 graphics card with 128 Mb VRAM. It's an older machine but runs all other graphics software very well.

Whenever I tried to add images or videos to VideoWave or MyDVD I got the the infamous "Runtime Error ---R6025 - Pure virtual function call" error message and application quits.

After following the instructions offered in a few different threads on this site and expending too much time, uninstalling & reinstalling, etc. (I did not remove WMP 11 or IE 7), I was ready to give up and download Nero. Just for "fun", I tried another idea. Instead of clearing my system of any conflicting software, I created a new clean "system" using virtual drive software "MojoPac" (http://www.mojopac.com). This creates a virtual C: drive with minimal system drivers on an external (or internal?) hard drive. I then installed EMC 9 on that drive with nothing else on it except Photoshop CS3 Beta.

 I was happily surprised when VideoWave & MyDVD worked without any apparent problems. I still had access to my laptop drive and could easily switch back & forth to my full system.

I just did this today so there might still be some other problems or missing codecs and drivers. At least I can have a controlled environment to add missing pieces until EMC breaks again. It's a shame that I have to isolate Roxio from all of my previous applications because it won't play nicely with others, but at least it's playing.

I've only been using MojoPac for about a month and it seems very stable and extremely useful, but I haven't done any rigorous testing so install at your own risk if you think this solution might help. I would welcome any feedback on how this works on other systems.
