DVD Builder Stalls (7.5)

sierratech.net

Question

It has been a while since I used DVD Builder, and during a last minute slide show preparation (built in Video Wave, useing storyboard) I had put together, the rendering phase stalled in step 2.

I have not installed IE7 so that's not the problem.

Just for testing purposes I created a simple project using two photographs (1600x1200 dpi) placed into storyboard and and attempted to test DVD builder with this simple Videowave project, and it stalled in step 3. The original project had 117 scanned images (most resized to (1600x1200 dpi) with transitions, 60 minutes of music (WAV Files) and animation (no video) and I let it run all night.

The simple test project with 2 still photos (found on local drive) videowave project reveals that DVD Builder has an issue, since I can generate an MPEG2 video within Videowave with no problem. The task manager reveals that DVD Builder is "Running", so I am perplexed why DVD Builder just stalls in the rendering process.

Computer Info:

1) DELL M60 2GHz Pentium-M

2) 1.5 GBYTES RAM

3) Primary Drive (C:\) has 4.3 Gbytes of Free Space (7200RPM)

4) External USB 2.0 Drive contains over 100Gbytes of free space.

5) Roxio Easy Media Creator™ 7 (Build 7.5.2.49 ENU )

6) Tried ISO Image generation

7) NEC 6500 Firmware 2.4 (Updated recently)

8) Windows XP Pro, SP2

I hate to uninstall ROXIO 7.5 just because last time I did that on an older Hard Drive, the uninstall gave me a Blue Screen of Death which took two weeks to fix when I found that the upper and lower filters in the registry contained DLLs that the uninstall had removed but did not clean up the registry. I now clone my drives, but I wish to avoid a reinstallation due to time contstraints.

Hmmmmm...... you may have to do a workaround. But before you do that, have you defragmented your hard drive lately? As noted before, 4.3 GB isn't very much free space and video software doesn't like fragmented files.

You said that you could generate an mpeg2 file with VideoWave. Have you made your production in VideoWave?

If you have, you should be able to make that into a file ( File\ Output production to..... Video File\ for DVD authoring\ Best. Then put that file onto a menu in DVD Builder.

See if it will make the image file to your external drive. I don't think you're going to have enough space on that internal drive.

Drive has very little fragmentation (defragged not too long ago). This is a Videowave Production with animated zoom and pans. The "TEST" project I tried had only two photos with no animation and no transitions. Since DVD Builder couldn't even do that, I don't feel th 4.3GB is the issue.

I will try to see if I can change the "Temp" drive to External Firewire drive and see if that helps. It would seem to me DVD Builder would check for space issues before rendering, and report a problem before jumping into the project, if space was the issue.

I just purchased version 9, if this becomes too much of a headache to fix. I just don't look forward to uninstalling 7.5 since the last time I unistalled 7, I ran into the "Blue Screen of DEATH". If it occurs again, at least I know how to fix the corrupted registry (been there done that).

I noticed that you said you tried to make an .iso 'image file'. Did that work?

If it did, you can use Nero to burn the DVD from that 'image file' (.iso)

Sometimes you'll get an error message if there isn't enough space, and sometimes not. I don't work for Roxio, so I don't know what error messages they built in.

However, I agree that space is probably not a problem if you cannot make either an image file or burn a DVD with only two pictures.

Is there anything different about these pictures than the pictures that you've burned in the past? ( New camera, different source of files?)

Before you do anything with the program ( upgrading or repairing), do a Windows \ Search\ Advanced for .png files in Hidden Folders and Subfolders. If you've edited any of those pictures in VideoWave or DVD Builder, the program saves the changes as a new picture in a .png file. They are in a hidden Application\ Roxio folder.

Move the .png files to another folder on your desktop. Unfortunately if you repair the program, those files get deleted ( a bug, I think) I don't know what happens to them if you upgrade.

Then try a Windows\ Add Remove Programs\ Roxio\ Change\ Repair.

Something has obviously changed since you last burned a DVD.

Only 4.3 GB of free space on the primary drive would cause problems especially if its not contiguous.

No, unfortunately the ISO file contained "0" bytes, so it existed in Filename only. Since it stalls in Step 2 (or test project stalled in Step 3) transcoding never occured. Very strange behavior.........

Since the TEST image is only two pictures, the 4.3 should not be an issue (Hence my Test). But since it is less than 4.7 I posted this information just in case this is required irrespective to project size. Microsoft updates has shrunk this down several GBYTES.

Hi Mate,

Have you burned other things with your DVD player without problem?

It may be the burner itself causing DVD Builder to crash. Try giving it a clean?

Hi Clara!

Yes, Creator Classic and NERO works fine.
