No Sound On Burned DVD from TiVo file

btice

Question

I downloaded Toast 8 yesterday and wanted to burn a DVD from a saved file on my TiVo. No problems setting up and transferring the file to the Mac. Next step was to burn the DVD. Everything seemed to go well. The only setting I changed was to set quality to "Best". The process went well without any error messages. The problem is that when I put the DVD into my JVC DVD player connected to my TV, I got the picture but no sound! I then played the DVD on the Mac. Had both picture and sound on the Mac. I burnt a second DVD to see if the first time didn't work right. The result was the same, no sound on the JVC DVD player.

Is there an audio encoding setting that I missed or other setting I should have changed to make the sound compatible with the JVC DVD player?

:) Thanks all, had the same problem with my movie made in Win Movie Maker and burnt with Media centre.

After pulling out most of my hair I decided to search the net and BINGO found these posts.

I changed my settings on my JVC and now have perfect sound as well as picture....

Thanks all again

I love the net

Cheers gts308

Since I don't have a TiVo -- yeah, I know, why am I replying -- I don't know the audio format of their recordings. But your description makes it likely to be MPEG audio just as I get with my EyeTV recordings. If that is the case then the problem is with the audio set up of your JVC DVD player. In the player's basic setup menu you'll find an option to output MPEG audio as PCM audio. Different brands of players call this different things. This option isn't automatically turned on. Check your JVC player' audio setup. I'm not referring to the audio options that are accessed by pressing the audio button on the remote. This is part of the player's initial set-up menu series.

I have the same problem.

What I don't understand is why the sound gets encoded as mpeg.

I had it set up to have the sound in dolby digital. Why is it still mpeg? When it wrote the disc, it multiplexed the titles (I had it set to not re-encode the video).

Any ideas?

I managed to get my sound working thanks to the hint from tsantee. Changing the sound output to PCM did not fix the problem immediately. I noticed another setting on the JVC DVD player named "Down Mix" which was initially set to "Off". I turned it on to one of its settings and I then had sound. In fact any of the settins of Down Mix allowed sound. Not sure what all this means but it worked for me.

Thanks for the help.
