"Capture now" is inactive

Mikael Lenfors

Question

Hello!

I just bought MyDVD 9 and am trying to make my first test DVD. I create a new projekt and select Capture/Import. In the dropdown my camera is selectable (tried both a Canon MV400i and a Sony DCR-PC5E). If I set the cam in "record" mode the picture is shown in MyDVD and I can select "Capture now". But if I select "Play" mode in the cam I can start/stop/wind/play the tape abd I see the picture in MyDVD but the "Capture now" buton is dimmed!!

Please help. Mikael

Actually, you can scene detect any video file at any time using Media Manager. Just right click on the file in Media Manager and select 'detect scenes'.

No idea why your capture isn't working. Personally, I don't use Media Import much. I like using a shareware app called WinDV. It scenes detects on-the-fly without stopping/rewinding at each scene. It also uses the date/time stamp on the tape as a filename for each 'take'. Comes in handy if you need to know the date.

My capture isn't working as well. I am trying to copy VHS Tape through Video Capture on EMC 9. When I select my Video capture device in the pulldown, it starts up, but then freezes and I get an error report to send to MS. I have a NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT card with 256K dedicated Video RAM. I have patched the card and updated DirctX 9. Will this freeware package do this for me?

Obviously, that doesn't work for everyone. As I stated before, all I get is the day/time that I capture it. Not the dates the video was taken. That's why I normally use WinDVD and I do agree that having such a feature in EMC9 would be nice. And fix smartscan so it doesn't do all that rewinding.

I don't think WinDV will work for you since WinDVD seems to be strictly for capturing from DV camcorder tape. What is you capture device?

Found the issue. The buttion is inactive if I invoke Media Import Manager from VideoWave. If I run Media Import Manager directly from Start Menu, the button is active and capture video is working as expected.

I have been using Movie Maker to capture and edit videos in the past and used MyDVD solely for authoring. Just thought it is now version 9 and everything should be good. Well, I am disappointed.

Like you said, "smart scan" plays and stops your MiniDV for every cut scene. And no actual video date embedded to the video clips is a show-stopper (I can't figure out the date stamp to put as part of the video title). And video clip selection process is not very initutive to use. Why can't one just drag & drop to make the video?

Microsoft's Video Maker v2.1 is free and hasn't changed in ages yet it does a much better job in those things. I guess I'll continue to use MM2 for video capture/editing and just use MyDVD to burn. What a waste to get the preimer version.

I am using Falcon II NTSC Video Capture. I just got off the Chat line with HP support. They suggested I use the MyDV that came with the computer It is Ver 7. I tried it and it worked. I don't understand. I captured video a couple weeks ago in EMC 9, but now I can't, but an older version does. This doesn't make sense, but at least I got a work around. I wish I never purchaesd the EMC 9 upgrade. Thanks for the help.

Hello again!

Found another PCI Firewire 1394 card from STLab in a box. Now it works.

Seem like the program is very senitive with the hardware! The motherboard I'm using is a ASUS P5B-E Plus and all other capture programs I'v teste has worked before.

Regards, Mikael

Glad you got it working! :)

If you are going to be doing a lot of capturing from digital camcorders (tape) then you might be interested in a small, free utility called WinDV. It allows you to capture to individual files (to avi format) based on the timestamp on your tape. This makes it a lot easier to edit you video since you are working with small files.

Gary,

I get the date/time for the detected scenes as shown in the snapshot below. Like you I prefer using WinDV to capture to avi in individual files based on the date/time stamp on the tape.

THE ONLY format that keeps the date/time stamp is DV AVI. That is with any software.

You can drag n drop clips from WIndows Explorer or from Media Manager. (not when you 'add movie' which is media selector).

I couldn't duplicate the problem as you described with my Sony TRV740 camcorder, but I will pass the info along.

I see, but MM2 does keep track of the timestamp in wmv, probably using some kind of bookmarks built into the software. In any case, this piece of info is so critical for video editing and I can't believe it remains being left out in a commerical product like VideoWave.

Thanks for clarificaiton. I am too used to MM2.

I can't believe it! Just upgrade to MyDVD 9 Studio Premier and my first stumbling block is immediately seen. "Capture Now" button is grey out no matter what combination of options I choose to transfer video from my Sony mini-DV.

I have no problem to capture from Movie Maker or Nero. If I can't capture the video, I can't use Video Wave to do video editing since it doesn't have built-in scene detection. Video Wave relies on "Smart Scan" from Media Import Manager to build the smaller video files to work with.

Any idea to solve that?

My Firewire card is Texas Instruments OHC Compliant IEEE, driver provided by Microsoft 5.1.2535.0. It's really really very standard. My Sony model is DCR-PC100 ntsc version.

I just tried using MM2 and can't find anything about 'date'. The Help files mentions it once:

Titles and credits.

Titles and credits let you enhance your movie by adding text-based information to your movie. You can add whatever text you want, but you may want to include information such as the title of your movie, your name, the date, and so forth.

But that is adding text manually. So where are you getting the date/time from the file. I can't find it. Right clicking on the file's thumbnail in the collections doesn't show it. If you are referring to 'show details' were it says 'date taken', that is NOT accurate for video. I captured twice using both options (Best Quality for this Computer and DV AVI) and both times it stated 1/27/07 (file creation date), but the video was taken weeks ago. The details are correct for still images from a digital camera because this info is embedded in the EXIF data of the JPG. At least in my case, WMM2 is not reading the date/time from my video.

WMV DOES NOT preserve the date/time if captured from a digital camcorder.

I use MM2 to capture my DV video via IEEE into DV-AVI or High quality video, ensuring MM2 to run the scene detection function. When the capture process is completed, there should be only one physical video file but in your collection, MM2 should generate a bunch of video clips. Each clip should be automatically named with the shooting date and time (e.g. 02/05/2006 2:15 pm). Not just date, but time as well. Roxio, please do something about this handy feature!
