My DVD Combo LE-Can't Copy DVD's

Joe P

Question

I just purchased a Dell Dimension E521. I'm trying to copy DVD's. I click the copy button and it appears to be working as it gives a project time countdown. It goes through the time but nothing happens. I then cancel the project and my computer freezes. It's getting frustrating. However, if I use the same process to copy a CD, it works fine. Any helpful suggestion is appreciated.

The problem is we just don't know what format they're in - so I went with belt and braces (suspenders to you lot over there - over here 'suspenders means something totally different)

I downloaded 9.0 and checked the updates for the NVIDIA nForce which stated there are no updates. I tried to copy the DVD again with the same problem. And again, it froze up the computer and won't eject the discs. I'm not very computer savvy so this is all a little foreign to me. I don't understand why a CD can copy but not the DVD's. I appreciate your help so far. Any other ideas?

Sorry, should have specified. I'm not copying commercial DVD's. I'm trying to copy DVD's that I made on a home DVD VCR recorder combo. I'm also trying to copy a DVD that was created I believe on a PC. Bottom line, any type of DVD I put in there won't copy. Any thoughts?

OK - first of all, check what the graphics card is in the computer (EMC does need a mid to high end one and won';t work with most of the onboard graphics chipsets)

Then - go to either the nVidia or ATI website (depending on the card) and download and install the latest drivers from there (the Dell ones could be a few months old). Also, update DirectX from MS to 9.0c (December release)

L:et us know what happens next (or if that doesn't work, tel;l us what the computer specs are, especially the graphics

Might be worth checking if your burner firmware is the latest version.

I had a similar problem, only reversed, when I cound burn DVDs but not CD's.

Updating the firmware worked for me.

Daithie, why should one have to worry about graphics cards, etc if you are simply making a copy of a DVD. There is no encoding, display, etc involved. Copying a DVD is a simple "transfer" of data, the copying program should not care what kind of data you are copying.

Of course if the OP is first capturing the DVD then its another story!

How do you go about the process?

First you need to check what firmware is installed on your burner.

EMC9 > Home > Tools > Disc Information will tell you what firmware version is on your burner.

Do a "Google" to look for latest firmware version for your burner.

Download and install making sure you follow the installation instructions to the letter or get somebody who knows a bit about this computing lark to do it for you.

I have a "Sony" DVD RW DW-D22A drive which is the rebadged "Lite On".

The latest firmware for that burner is BYS6.

Don't know what the original version was.

However unless you have exactly the same drive, BYS6 will mean nothing to your burner.

Stick to your "Tech Support" advice and................................ good luck.

Well, tech support was worthless. Here is what they said...

Dear customer

We are sorry to inform you, we only support display monitors, you may need to contact DELL computers or Roxio support team for this issue, thank you for your time.

That puts me in full circle. How can I update firmware if the firmware company doesn't help? Like I said earlier, I am not computer savvy so that makes this all the more frustrating.

You are probably right except from my own experience my burner was a Sony "rebadged" Lite-On unit.

Sony's site had nothing. I had been searching for 18 months.

Google found me firmware for my Lite-On "Sony" which appeared to be "Kosher".

It must have been o.k. because it solved my intial problems with EMC9.

I checked the firmware and it is KDS1. I sent their tech support an email to confirm an upgrade. Once I get that and download I'll let you know if it worked. I'm curious, is this the same firmware you had? If so, what upgrade did you install?

According to my search on Google KDS only make monitors.

What make is your burner?

Go on their web site and search for firmware updates as per "gi7omy's" advice earlier.

Actually Brian it's better to go to the drive maker's website rather than google for it

Reason is there are a lot of hacked firmware 'updates' floating around which could trash the drive
