Windows Vista review

Walt Mosssburg of the WALL STREET JOURNAL is generally positive about Windows Vista -

http://ptech.wsj.com/ptech.html

altho he would not need to replace software that Vista and/or IE 7 and/or WinPlayer 11 broke.

It has been said the OS is mostly a DRM delivery system - here's a comment on DRM:

http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/vista_cost.html

There is an executive summary at the top, and the following executive executive summary just under it:

The Vista Content Protection specification could very well constitute the

longest suicide note in history

I don't use the Beast (WinXP SP2) any more than I have to - with luck, updating Norton every other week, period - my temper runs too hot with that OS, and I think Vista wd be worse. :)

I generally agree with most of what he states and agree with the "Largely Unexciting" part of his title. It has benefits and they're not for everyone's taste.

I feel the whole DRM thing in Vista might be blown out of proportion but DRM is a thorn in everyone's side and MS is playing the game.

I will probably get the new Windows Operating System the same way that I always get the new OS......

When I buy a new computer........

I wonder how much longer after Vista is released will you be able to get a new system with an OS other than Vista...say from Dell, HP, Gateway etc.????? They'll want to sell Vista so that you will pay a bit more for the added horsepower you'll need for it to work best so why would they want to sell it with XP and support it?

I'm with you. When I get a new system, it'll most likely come with Vista. I already have a free copy and haven't even touched it yet.

"Microsoft look set to do quite well out of it, provided we all lap it up like we're supposed to."

From January 30th, all new PCs will come pre-installed with Windows Vista. There are several good reasons not to use it.

You can get Vista-free computers from Apple, and ones you put together yourself - and I'm learning a lot about the latter. :)

Walmart used to sell computers without an OS and even some with Linspire linux. I haven't checked that out lately.

I never even think of Walmart when looking for computers. Somehow, it just doesn't feel right even if the price is right. :)

Just because a computer comes loaded with an OS doesn't mean you have to keep it. You could reinstall XP or any Linux OS. Or as Lynn suggests further down . . . you could build a box yourself (or find someone to do it).

I read the article "Why use Windows Vista" and wonder if anyone actually thinks that the music, movies etc. that everyone downloads off the net won't play in Vista. Never underestimate hackers. They will, if not already, have worked out a way to do everything you can now do on an XP system. You can take that to the bank!

That has already been decided, and not by Wally's World. :)

That is a very sad comment on the state of society and the world. :D

OT but along the same lines . . . after the new year arrived, there were some things I just had to get off my chest so I wrote an editorial to start off 2007. You can read it here. Note of caution to grandpabruce at al.

Hmm - a shade misleading really.

What actually killed Betamax wasn't what was available to rent (the pirates as usual had everything anyway) but the service costs.

To replace video heads on a VHS machine meant taking out two screws and unsoldering 4 wires and removing the head drum. Replace the drum, re-solder the wires and fire up a tape and maybe tweak the guide rollers to centre tracking and away it went - total time, under 30 minutes. Betamax however (until the very end when the Sanyo 3500 appeared) had the heads as a disc under the drum - this had to be set using an eccentricity gauge according to the maker's specs - then a check (and usually a reset cos you didn't quite get it right) - time involved - 2 hours plus

A note btw on 'pre-installed OS' - MS has been known to lean heavily on box shifters 'If you supply any computers without Windows, we'll stop you using it at all' - they usually fall into line after that and refuse to ship with a *nix OS

I still have 2 beta machines. One Sanyo standard beta and a Sony Superbeta. :) I haven't used them in years, but there are some things that I would like to dump to my computer and burn DVD's. I might have to pull one out and fire it up.

There is just one big "HOOPLA" about Vista. Some of it is true and some speculations. Seems to me that each time MS has come out with a new OS, there is the same old "good, bad & ugly" syndrome that is published about it. But after a year or so, the dust settles and everyone uses it without all the talk. The same thing happened when they went from the old DOS to Windows and more windows. And now it's just Windows to Vista

Give the OS a year and all this hoopla will be forgot :D:) I'll still keep building my own even if it has XP or Vista on it.

Building your own is no problem - buying one with an OS that you may want is another matter. Even leaving *nix out of the equation, have a look round at the machines on offer right now and you'll find, almost without exception, they ship with XP Home.

Now that's fine and dandy, BUT, the same machines are coming with 64 bit and even dual core processors and Home doesn't even know what those are - you need XP Pro or even XP Pro 64 bit to run those but try to get your friendly neighbourhood box-shifter to replace Home with Pro and they'll faint on the spot :)

Anyone taking bets that ALL boxes coming out with Vista will have the most basic version (even if it's a super-duper multi-core CPU fitted) ?

No way I'd use Basic. It does almost none of what Vista brags about. I've tested the 64 and 32 bit versions of Premium and Ultimate and wouldn't get anything but. I think, but am not sure, if you order a pc now with XP Pro, you're 'free' (my 2nd favorite 4 letter word after beer) upgrade will be Premium and you'll pay to have Ultimate. If you get a system with XP Home, you're only going to get the Basic version of Vista as a 'free' upgrade. I don't think many are going to bring this point up like they should.

I agree with Frank. We'll most likely stop all the fussing by the time the first patch is out.

id agree on that comment to Paul, iv tested all of them bar the media centre version and if im to move to vista ill go ultamate...

as to the avalability of other Operating systems after Vista is released, there will be a shut off by the OEM system builders strait away , then the resalers will be the only one with the box stock untill that is gone, then as Lynn has said , it will be an EBay item...

Would it be a Good Thing to be chosen by Walmart?

Pickles!

Good memory, and like the Valasic pickle deal. The one Wal-Mart starts selling,

with there huge retail exposure, most likely will be the winner. They are the largest

seller of CD's and DVD's, with $0.37 of every retail dollar spent at Wal-Mart in the U.S.

The format that ends up in Wal-Mart stores, will probably be the less expensive one. That

will gain them one third of the retail market exposure through Wal-Mart. Nuf-said a giant!

As far as your question Brendon, Valasic might tell you no. From what I read about there

deal with Wal-Mart!

The problem will be whether or not new drivers for new hardware will be available for your old version of Windows. Obviously, *nix development continues. This discussion just made me realize I should be looking to get a copy of XP Pro at some point (I'm still running 2000), just to be able to stay behind the curve.

Wow, hadn't thought of that. Of course, it's possible to buy older hardware too. The machine I have now does everything I need. Maybe I need to be looking for a spare to stay behind the curve!

Well I have bought today's hardware and installed it in a 1999 machine with no problems.

It runs 98SE, so hardware seems to do a way better job than some well know software I own :)

You are wise to think ahead!!!!
