Hybrid disk enhancements

eytan_bernet

Question

Hybrid disks support this, but not custom hybrids. Has this been rectified in Toast 8? Can I have a custom Hybrid with filenames longer than 32 characters? Custom Hybrid is the only way you can lay out the disk as you want (visually) but it has a 32 character file name limit. Has this been addressed?

Thank you - that works...

How did you get that to work? I tried over and over again every step that freshburn to help in controlling the layout and placement of icons in regards to a background image that I could, with no luck. Once burning a disc or even saving it as a disc image, when opened on my Mac, its just a folder with icons dumped wherever they pleased. Any suggestions that you might have in helping my situation? I'm desperately needing to get this to work correctly!

Thanks in advance.

So you made a disc image with everything laid out properly, you eject it and remount it and it works?

What do you use for your image creation tools?

It is after you make an image hat works and lock it, THEN you copy all the files into Toast...

I am having a similar problem, but the issue cannot be resolved by using the "Mac & PC" option. I have a "fscommand" folder that has identically named files that are different for the Mac / PC sides.. but Toast does not give you the option in "Mac & PC" mode to have a like-named folder or file be different actual files on the disc. Anyone figured out a solution for this?

Freshburn, if you do not know the specifics of the problem, please do not offer a generic answer that does not address my specific issue....

When creating custom hybrid CDs in Toast 7, the filenames get truncated/modified to 32 characters. This does not occur when you create a Mac/Windows CD, only with custom hybrid.

I had submitted this as a bug in Toast 7, you can see it in the threads. I am asking if this has been fixed/addressed in Toast 8.

I use Toast in a professional environment, where we create cross platform CDs with only one set of data. The data often refers to files on the disk (say PDF files with long names). File name links do no work when they get truncated, so we have been forced to use the Mac/Windows CD format. While this works for the file name length, it does not work for doing custom layouts and background graphics - while we can have a custom background, we have no control over the layout/size of the window, nor icon placement. Custom Hybrid allowed for all those features....

So what I need is custom hybrid WITHOUT the 32 character limit, not generic support for 64 character filenames when doing a Mac/Windows CD.... :)

Hmmm... Good question - I might need to know that in the future. No clue how you would do this...

Hi there,

I've followed the directions for creating a mac/pc disk,

but my final product re-shuffles the icon/window positions.

Is this normal? Do I have to use the legacy format in order to have control over the

window and icon position on the Mac side?

OK, I had some time today to post regarding this. First let me talk a little about the 32 character limitation.

Custom Hybrid and ISO format in Toast 7 and 8 both support 64 character length. However, as you have noticed, when items are shared between the ISO and Mac partitions the character length is truncated to 32 characters.

This happens for several reasons. Prior to Toast 6.1.2 when doing a custom Hybrid Toast always used Optimize On-the-fly. Optimize On-the-fly was designed to speed up load times because the files were laid out in a specific order so that older, slower CD comes would work faster. Custom Hybrid is an old format and in most case not needed anymore.

The problem with Optimize on-the-fly is that any HFS+ partition would be converted to HFS. When this happens, all the HFS limitations happen. For example, prior to Toast 6.1.2, long file names and data over 700MB could not be used in Custom Hybrid. This meant you couldn't burn a Custom Hybrid to DVD.

In Toast 6.1.2 and above there was a changed that allows Optimize on-the-fly to be turned on and off. What this allow was people to burn a custom hybrid with an HFS+ partition and keep the long file names and burn to DVD. It also allowed 64 length ISO names.

However, when files are shared between ISO and Mac, Optimize on-the-fly has to be turned on. When it is turned on, the HFS+ volume is converted to HFS, HFS names can't be over 32, thus the ISO names are also truncated to match.

The best option if you must use Custom Hybrid is to not share the data. This is a limitation of the format and will likely never change. Everything can be done in Mac & PC format.

When I master a CD, I use Mac & PC or Mac Only format. I have found that I can do everything I need in these to formats.

Here is what I've found that works the best.

1. Create a temp partition in Toast or using Disc Utility create a read/write DMG.

2. To this partition, add all your files. When using an image, you can set the icon position, background, custom icon, window positions, etc. I assume you know how to do these things as you have experience master CD.

3. After you have the disc image the way you want, launch Toast and select Mac and PC

4. In the Preferences set Toast to display hidden files.

5. Drag and drop the temp partition or mounted disc image into Mac and PC format

6. Delete any files you don't want from the image. For example, the Finder writes .Trash and Spotlight files to the disc which are not needed.

7. You can set the Mac Only files by deselecting the PC check box. I always deselect the custom background, disc icon, and any other files not need on the PC.

8. DO NOT delete the .DS_store files. This file is were all the info for the finder layout is stored. If you delete it, you will loose everything.

9. I always like to place a . (period) in from of any files I won't want the Mac to see. You can do this to the background image, etc. I usually do this in the Terminal when I master a disc, but you can do it in Toast. You can also double click a file and set it to Invisible. This is good for the PC side.

10. Set the disc to Auto-Open in Toast if you like.

Finally, burn the disc. You can also save as a disc image and mount in with Toast to see the ISO and Mac partition. Before mounting, I recommend locking the image in the finder.

After this is done, you should have a Hybrid disc more like you expect. This has worked a lot better for me that Custom Hybrid.

If for some reason you need more control over the ISO side, you can use Custom Hybrid but not share that data.

Or, you can use the new Image Merge format in Toast to merge and ISO and Mac image into a Custom Hybrid. This will let you create an image on the PC and Mac and combined the two.

I hope this helps a little.

I too use Toast in a professional environment and I create Hybrid CD/DVD with custom layouts, icons, position, etc all in Mac&PC format.

It's clear you don't know how to do this. Since you feel the need to be so rude, I no longer feel the need to help you.

Well, since I asked a real question, in which indicated I had a problem that Toast did not address and that I submitted it as a bug, and you dismissed it with a simple "Well, Toast already does that", it seems to me that you were the rude one first....

However, if you want to offer real help, I will happily take it - but currently, Custom Hybrid (in Toast 7) will truncate any shared filenames LONGER THAN 32 characters to the bizarre names with numbers at the end. This will NOT happen if I do a Mac & PC. However, manipulating the CD layout with a Mac & PC disk is tenuous at best. With custom hybrid, I can use something like Filestorm to layout my CD exactly how I like it, or simply do it in the finder with Toast or Disk Utility. I have not seen any useful tutotrials or instructions on how to do that with the Mac & PC option. If you can tell me how I can do a custom layout with the Mac & PC combo option, I will be very grateful.

Thank you for the detailed instructions and an explanation of why the features work/do not work. I wish Roxio had this is an FAQ on their website or somewhere else for people looking for support.

Again, thank you. Will try it in the next couple of days and report my results here.
