Microsoft to make Vista available online

And just how large are those downloads. One day by cable or 6 by dial-up? :)

I did a bit of googling to find the answer.

Microsoft Windows Vista (English 32-bit) RC2 Build 5744 beta

File Size: 2,552,570 KB

That's a little over 2.5GB. On a 56k actually pullling in 40kbs, rounded off, 1,064 hours. Say a bit over 44 days, assuming no connection breaks.

But then, WinVista wasn't designed with 56k in mind. It's like, if you have to ask how much it costs to have a yacht, you can't afford it. :D

LOL, Marlin. For me, it will take NO time, at all. I like my XP. :)

Never said I was going to get it. Too many items I have, software wise, I have no idea whether they will work, and the Vista upgrade advisor was absolutely no help in that case. I figure, maybe a year or two, if I am forced to go to it.

Get it with a new box, or build a new box for it.

That way you have the old one as a backup :)

I'm with you on the year or two, and only if I am forced to, too.

I had heard that they may be using Bittorent for this but as of yet, there's been no more talk.

On a side note, I needed a real cheap computer for one of my systems at work (this system has been working with Win98 for years and needs nothing fancy) and I simply went to a local store and got a quicky. It allows me to get a free upgrade to Vista Premium for $9.95 plus tax. I'll never put it on that system but wondered if I can sell it on Ebay????? :)

Personally, I'm going to give it a complete miss

What are we getting for our money when you look at it

A bloated OS that tries to take total control of the PC

An OS that won't let you install drivers unless they have been approved by MS

An OS that screams if you try to do anything it doesn't want

When IBM invented the PC years ago they just handed out the specs to anyone who wanted them and more or less said "Look - this is how it works and how it fits together - go build your own and it will be compatible". Now MS is saying "We control what you do - if you don't like it - tough"

How long before an 'update' to Vista will stop you installing an app which MS doesn't approve of - and then stop you (the DRM settings will be even more rigidly enforced and it's quite possible that it will eventually block you watching or listening to 'unapproved' media)

Maybe I'm paranoid (doesn't mean they ain't out to get us tho)

there is a good reasion why the image is over 2 gig , as it contains ALL the versions on it, you just purchase the CDKEY from MS for the version you want and it does all the rest it's self...

anyhow , i dont think there will be to much hype of the vista side for most users, as most will stay with there current until they have to get it via a new PC....

anyhow, it's just a few days away and it will be kinda funny to see the first posts from users whom have it asking for advice,,,,,
