TiVoToGo and Sleep

Gerry Schultz

Question

To All:

I purchased Toast 8 last week and got it installed yesterday. I had some problems with the installation on my iMac but after a call to Roxio tech support, she got the program to install on my system.

Anyway, my question relates to tranferring TiVo programs to my iMac. I have three TiVos and when I transfer programs to the mac, the long ones can take upwards of 3 hours to copy the files. So, Im thinking that I will start a transfer before I go to work or to bed.

Now, in the Energy Savings preferences, I set the iMac to go to sleep in 3 hours, the screen to go to sleep in about 2 1/2 hours and the hard drive never spins down. Even doing that, if the mac goes to sleep the TiVo program transfer is interrupted and when I wake the mac up amnually, that transfer is NOT resumed. So far, I have found that I have to cancel the transfer and start all over. As long as it doesn't go to sleep, the TiVo transfer works fine.

So, finally, what is recommended as the best energy savings so that I can go to bed and the files are on the iMac in the morning but it can still save energy and go to sleep when done. This question can also be applied to burning a DVD since programs must be transcoded before they are burned to DVD, also taking a long time. What are the best settings for getting a good burn on Toast without having the Mac energy settings messing that up?

So far, I'm quite impressed with Toast 8. It seems like a well done program but time will tell.

I just had a thought. Could Roxio update Toast so that during TiVo program transfers or transcoding for burns, a Mac's sleep functions could be disabled so the functions could complete and when finished be re-enabled so the mac can go to sleep based upon preferences?

Thanks,

Gerry

This is a good suggestion for future, thank you!
