*YET ANOTHER* MPEG2 Activation - "No Permission - Bad Installation" Thread

TChris

Question

OK, I've tried to do some homework on this. I have read the other threads about the "No Permission - Bad Installation" issue, and none of the other solutions have worked for me.

I am not using EMC9 on a home computer, but on a corporate LAN. Our internet connection is constant, firewalled and proxied. The activation fails (as it seems to for EVERYONE. Hello, Roxio??) I can't "disconnect my modem", and disconnecting my Ethernet connection doesn't force the manual activation process. Neither does disabling my Ethernet adapter.

Any other ways to manually activate the MPEG2 codec? (Hey, Roxio, here's a brilliant idea: How about a patch for EMC9 that puts a "Manually activate MPEG2 codec" menu item, shortcut or button somewhere in the software?)

:)

Sincerely,

Terry - A long-time Adaptec/Roxio/Sonic customer, IS specialist and helpdesk support analyst

Feel like I am beating a dead horse, but is the consensus to try what has been discussed (resolving the MPEG-2 activation problem via following appropriate Roxio installation instructions) and if this does not work, just wait for Roxio to address the problem? Perhaps if we all continue to barrage customer service?

Part of the problem here is that the mpeg codec isn't produced by Roxio but is from a third party source and they insisted on the acticvation procedure, so we're all sort of stuck until something is worked out to cure it

That's why it's a separate activation from the main program

I'll try this but, just out of curiosity, I wonder just what component is being referred to by the "No Permission - Bad Installation' message. Is it primarily a rights issue? Administrator or Firewall problem? or is it a corrupt file. Certainly the entire Creator 9 install isn't bad because everything works except this activation routine. If it is the MPEG-2 codec..can that be updated?

Like many others I have followed the suggestions:

I have done 7 'clean' installs.

I have never seen the manual activation screen even when disconnected from the internet.

I looked for the Knowledgebase article #000086CR but it doesn't exist...has it been removed?

This didn't work, also. I solved the problem, however, buy using the Roxio Knowledge base article 000086CR, Clean installation of Easy Media Creator. Followed the directions explicitly and solved all my problems. This is the place to go for many fixes.

also had a problem with the CD id number, and another issue with an "insert disc" problem but there are fixes on these boards for that also. Life is good!

thanks for you help

Hey Everyone, I Hated this problem with the Activation of MPEG2 codec! It has been a nightmare, but I think I have finally got it. I hope this works for everyone. Basically I did everything the very helpful forums have said, but I still had the activation problem, either it was the "Invalid Product Key" problem or the "ERR_ACTIVATION_INVALID_PK" error. Well I tried the clean uninstall and manual activation fixes, but they did not work. I also tried to do phone activation, but got caught in the last 5 numbers being invalid loop, aarrgh!! So here's the steps I went through to finally activate the MPEG2 codec.

1. You must absolutely do the clean uninstall, follow instructions carefully. http://kb.roxio.com/content/kb/Creator/000086CR With Vista, RUN is under Accessories folder. Now, to do the regedit thing I used tweaknow regcleaner, but I guess you can use any regeditor or cleaner. Then, use Vista's Search function to search for "Roxio" and "Sonic". Use Advanced Search, Search Location = Everywhere, and Check Off Include - Non-indexed, Hidden and System Files. Erase the folders and Run a Regeditor/Cleaner Program again, just in case.

2. Then I turned on the Startup programs again but disabled my Antivirus. I started to install but got the invalid CD Key problem. I downloaded the patch and was able to get that working. (http://kb.roxio.com/content/kb/Creator/000116CR) I only installed the Roxio program and NOT the Content. I downloaded mine so there were 2 files.

3. If your installation was successful, you should be prompted to Restart. I did that also and double clicked the Roxio Icon. I chose to Capture Video Function because that was the problem program for me. Then I activated and was SUCCESSFUL, I nearly peed my pants b/c I was so happy, Just Kidding! Then i installed content. So far No problems except with Videowave! But hopefully I will find a solution here for that!

I really hope this works for everyone because I was so frustrated with it also. I didn't want to lose the $70 I paid for the program, I hope it was worth the hassles! Happy Burning Everyone!

Actually, I think Roxio do provide the MPEG codec.

Otherwise, how does EMC9 decode and encode mpegs?

Roxio has stated that they use a third party codec and that's why the activation. I don't think any company brags about activation as it's not a much liked concept but they didn't hide the fact that it was necessary in v9. We're all hopeful future versions don't continue this but who knows?

They may supply it - but it comes from a third party who are the ones who insisted on the second activation.

It's like MS - the 'cd' stuff and the defrag in windows aren't developed inhouse - they're licensed from outside sources

Do you happen to have a link or documentation?

I had always thought that when Sonic acquired Roxio, was to do away with licensing a 3rd party decoder/encoder, ie. the mainconcept decoder/encoder.

And the activation component was actually a feature so that the OEM and reseller could configure which features to be on or not.

For instance, the most obvious, MPEG2 decoder.

I could be wrong, but I would like to know the fact.

The only ones would be the Roxio EMC9, and the various OEM versions - DE, XE and so on - we've no way of knowing what versions HP or Dell have put on theirs

9 De Luxe is exactly the same as 9 with some added extras is all

Thanks, I got the article.I followed the instructions as given and have managed to get all Roxio software off my machine...however, I now have a new problem. When I try to re-install my CD Key is not longer valid so I can't get the software that WORKED back on to see if the one component that didn't work has been fixed.

I'm sorry but I'm wondering if Roxio software is worth the trouble.

I have used Creator since version 4 and have seen a progressive increase in the problems that each version brings with it. Whether it is interfering with other software or just having major components that are incompatible with the current version of Windows...it has just kept getting worse and worse.

I am not sure if I even want to install Creator 9 again but I will check back to see what answers people might have for me....if any.

Do any of us need this Sh*t? :angry2:

You found the answer, in the other thread. That's good.

Cigar, we know you have a problem - but posting in just about every thread going isn't going to help.

THIS case referred to a firewalled corporate local area network machine - totally different to your problem

Hopefully the upcoming patch will help. I say hopefully because I'm not privy to what is being done (none of us are) but Roxio DO know of it

You're right. You're both wrong and anal. ;)

If you are replying just to leave a condescending remark, you might have as well not have replied at all.

All I'm seeking is the fact.

The fact behind what is exactly the activation for.
