White Edges when adding video files

BlueTarp

Question

Whenever I add a particular video file into Toast, either from a DV import or through adding a quicktime file, I get white vertical edges during a portion of the movie. These white edges are not present in any of the source media and are especially noticeable since the background is black. This happens during the end credits of the movie which were created in Adobe Illustrator and modified in both Photoshop and ImageReady and imported to Avid XPress Pro (and then exported to both Quicktime and tape). When the text in the credits get close to the edge you can see some of the text reflected in the vertical edge. This effect is present both in the finished burned disc, a preview disc image and in the preview under the Edit-Video menu. Any suggestions? The software is brand-new, I just bought it two days ago.

Also when previewed on a conventional DVD player, the image is blown out and jittery, I am wondering if this is just a player issue since there are no issues when I play it on the DVD player on my computer.

Do the edges also appear on the TV playback or are they in the overscan area outside the screen?

Jittery video indicates that the Interlacing Field Dominance is reversed. This isn't a problem on the computer because it deinterlaces the video. You can change the Field Dominance order in the custom encoder settings window.

I tried turning on the Half-PEL, (the motion estamation is already set on best) and there was no change in the resulting disk image. Since the white edges are present in the preview box, could this possibly be an import issue?

This is a bit beyond my expertise, but graphics and still images are often rendered at 640x480 within video applications while the video is 720x480. So the credits you created in Illustrator and Photoshop may be a different resolution than the video. I suggest posting this issue in an Avid or Adobe -- or maybe even a Final Cut -- forum. I'm suspecting that the white line is due to the difference between 640- and 720-pixel sources.
