Burning data files to DVD disc

Psalmist

Question

New to the forum... Using Creator Classic from Roxio EMC 7.5 and trying to copy data files to DVD for simple backup purposes. I am using Sony DVD+R discs. I am burning from within "My Documents" folder 2 next-level folders [with potentially multiple sub-folder levels as content]. The project shows a total estimated size of 4122.7 MB on 1 disc.

When I try to burn it, I get this error message [hmmm... tried to paste a screen capture image, but couldn't figure that out quickly...] Error message reads: "Compatibility Warning: One or more paths in this project have exceeded the maximum length allowed by the current file system. You may continue to burn this disc, but the files in these paths may not be readable. Click OK to record the disc anyway."

I presume this is telling me that the complete file path from C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]\My Documents\[sub-levels...\[file name.ext] is too long?? Is there a way to identify what needs to be shortened to fit the required limit? What IS the limit... number of sub-levels? total characters? or???

Any positive help appreciated!

Thanks, Lynn! I will try your tips. When I get this warning, then click "OK" to proceed with the burn, is the system simply abbreviating the filenames on the CD at the burn? or is it likely that the file will actually be unusable when I need it as backup? When I compare the properties of the original files with what I see on the disc, the folder, filecount and data bytes all appear to be the same. Do I need to start over on these discs that I have already created, or am I likely to be OK on them?

I am backing up my XP machine... so am I correctly understanding your tip to use UDF, turn off Validate and Bridge, will result in a disc that I can burn with complete filenames and paths, which will be readable on this same computer as backups? I have another machine that is Win98, but will not be trying to load them there.

Your thoughts appreciated.

If you don't follow the tips about using UDF, it won't simply change filenames but will not even copy some files and folders.

Thanks, James! Sounds like I may need to go back and repeat much of my work from yesterday to assure full and usable files for restoration...

Interesting... all this began when I downloaded the recent Windows update from MS and failed to notice they included IE7. I am adding another item under general chat on that one!

I have auto-update turned OFF, and expect to see a nag every time I reboot the Beast (WinXP SP2) or I know they've tampered with the settings again.

I pay attention to alerts for when the monthly updates are (Roxio General Chat, and BBC news), use the update option from the Start button or help on the start menu, and choose manual (custom) update. And I look at what each of the items are, and if I want them.

I'm under some kind of illusion it's MY computer, not Microsoft's.

Just uninstall IE7 from add/remove programs in control panel (it will be listed as 'Internet Explorer' but it is 7)

Also remove Media Player 11 if you installed that as well

Thanks for your response... I had already removed IE7, and have not loaded MP 11 [still at version 10], but still having the problems with the DEactivating window and the screensaver not running...

Anything in the "security" portion of the updates that might be causing such an issue?

Lynn, there is an option to turn off the update nag. I did that a long time ago! Once a month I check to see what's available for update then pick and choose. IE 7 and WMP 11 are relegated to "don't show this update again" status. :)

With MS, any screwup is possible! You might uninstall recent updates to see if it makes a difference. Also check other recently installed software and/or changes to your computer configuration.

Thanks! Years ago I was a Mac enthusiast... too bad the application software was unaffordable/unavailable at that time...

Copied from an old post by James Hardin:

You are running headlong into two separate but related limitations, the Operating System and Joliet file system…

Joliet Standards:

Filename – 64 characters max

Pathname – 128 characters (full path + filename)

8 subdirectories max

4gb file length limit

Nothing is going to change that, not V6, V7 or anything else!

Operating System: NO, Win9x or NT operating system can read past those limits on a CD!

XP/W2K can read past them but then you have to be able to create a CD without using Joliet…

V6 & V7 can create such a CD but only if you choose UDF for the file system and set NO Bridge for the option. But keep in mind no Win9x/NT machine can read past Joliet limits.

Only thing to add, and this is important too, is to turn off Validate.

UDF

No Bridge

Validate – Off

Validate checks directory/file structure based on Joliet! Thus if you set the other two, it will issue a warning about file lengths, and you will be right back where you started.

And they could turn it back on and you'd never even know it :)
